🔧 Forte - Headlight Bulb Replacement

You’ll replace the burned-out headlight bulbs from behind the headlight housing (under the hood). This is usually a quick job, but it’s important not to touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers to prevent early failure.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

Assumption: “Headlight bulbs” = low-beam bulbs (commonly H11 on your Forte).

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let the headlight housings cool 10-15 minutes (bulbs get very hot).
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves and do not touch the new bulb glass (skin oils shorten bulb life).
  • ⚠️ If a bulb was shattered, wear eye protection and remove all glass pieces.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • 10mm socket
  • 3/8" ratchet
  • 3" extension (3/8" drive)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low-beam headlight bulb (typically H11) - Qty: 2
  • Dielectric grease (optional) - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and use a flashlight to locate the back of each headlight housing.
  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the rear of the headlight housings

  • Open the hood and look behind each headlight assembly.
  • If an intake snorkel/cover blocks your hand, remove its clips using a trim clip removal tool.
  • If a small bracket or cover uses bolts, remove them with a 10mm socket, 3/8" ratchet, and 3" extension.
  • Set clips/bolts aside in a small cup.

Step 2: Remove the electrical connector

  • Find the bulb’s electrical plug at the back of the headlight.
  • Press the locking tab and pull the connector straight off by hand.
  • If it’s tight, wiggle gently—do not pull on the wires.

Step 3: Remove the old bulb

  • Grasp the bulb base and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn.
  • Pull the bulb straight out of the headlight housing.
  • Compare the old bulb to the new one to confirm the same locking tabs and shape.

Step 4: Install the new bulb (no touching the glass)

  • While wearing nitrile gloves, insert the new bulb into the housing in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Rotate clockwise about 1/4 turn until it fully locks in place.
  • If you accidentally touch the glass, clean it with rubbing alcohol and a lint-free towel, then let it dry.

Step 5: Reconnect the connector and protect the connection

  • Push the electrical connector back onto the bulb until it clicks.
  • Optional: apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the connector seal (this helps keep moisture out).

Step 6: Repeat on the other side and reassemble

  • Repeat Steps 1-5 for the other headlight bulb.
  • Reinstall any snorkel/covers you removed using the 10mm socket, 3/8" ratchet, and trim clip removal tool.
  • Snug any 10mm bolts by hand with the ratchet (do not overtighten plastic parts).

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the headlights ON and confirm both low beams work.
  • Check high beams and turn signals to make sure no other connector was bumped loose.
  • At night, verify the beams look even side-to-side; if one looks “off,” the bulb may not be fully seated.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $120-$250 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $25-$80 (parts only)

You Save: $95-$170 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
