🔧 Civic - Headlight Bulb Replacement

On your Civic, the “headlight bulbs” usually means the low-beam bulbs (the main headlights you drive with at night). You replace them from behind each headlight housing in the engine bay—no bumper removal needed.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the headlights OFF and let bulbs cool 10+ minutes (they get very hot).
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oils shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Support the hood securely and keep tools away from the battery terminals.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • 10mm socket
  • 3/8" ratchet
  • 6" extension

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low-beam headlight bulb (H11 halogen) - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and switch the headlight stalk to OFF.
  • Open the hood and make sure the bulbs are cool to the touch.
  • Put on nitrile gloves (they help you avoid touching the bulb glass).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm you’re replacing the low beams

  • Turn the headlights ON briefly, then OFF.
  • Use a flashlight to confirm which side is out (driver, passenger, or both).
  • Low beams are the main “night driving” lights.

Step 2: Access the back of the driver-side headlight

  • Stand at the front of the car and look behind the driver-side headlight housing.
  • Use a flashlight to locate the rear dust cover (a round cap that seals the housing from moisture).

Step 3: Remove the dust cover

  • Remove the dust cover by turning it counterclockwise by hand.
  • If it’s tight, use nitrile gloves for grip—don’t pry on the housing.

Step 4: Unplug the bulb electrical connector

  • Press the connector lock tab and pull the connector straight off the bulb.
  • If it won’t release, use a flashlight to find the tab, then wiggle while pulling (no yanking on wires).

Step 5: Remove the old bulb

  • Rotate the bulb counterclockwise (about a quarter-turn) and pull it straight out.
  • Set the old bulb aside.

Step 6: Install the new bulb (no-touch rule)

  • With nitrile gloves on, insert the new H11 bulb into the housing (it only seats one way).
  • Rotate the bulb clockwise until it locks in place.
  • If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it with a clean lint-free cloth (use the flashlight to inspect).

Step 7: Reconnect and reseal

  • Push the electrical connector back on until it clicks.
  • Reinstall the dust cover and turn it clockwise until fully seated (this keeps moisture out).

Step 8: Replace the passenger-side bulb

  • Repeat Steps 2–7 on the passenger side.
  • If your hand access is tight, use a trim clip removal tool to carefully unclip nearby plastic retainers, and use a 10mm socket with 3/8" ratchet and 6" extension to remove any small brackets/bolts that are clearly in the way, then reinstall them after.
  • Take a quick photo before moving anything.

Step 9: Test the headlights

  • Turn the headlights ON and confirm both low beams work.
  • Check that the dust covers are fully seated (no gaps).

âś… After Repair

  • Verify low beams on both sides, then check high beams and turn signals to make sure nothing else was unplugged.
  • At night, confirm the light pattern looks even left-to-right.
  • Keep the old bulbs as spares only if they still work.
