How to Replace Low Beam (H11/D3S) & High Beam (9005) Headlight Bulbs on a 2018 Chevy Tahoe
Step-by-step DIY guide with tools, bulb types (halogen vs HID), safety tips, and key torque specs

🔧 Tahoe - Headlight Bulb Replacement
You can replace the headlight bulbs on your Tahoe from under the hood without removing the whole headlamp assembly. The only tricky part is making enough room on each side (air intake parts on the driver side, washer filler neck on the passenger side).
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 0.8-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ If your Tahoe has HID (xenon) low beams, turn lights OFF and let them sit 10 minutes before touching anything.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass of a halogen bulb with bare fingers (skin oils shorten bulb life).
- ⚠️ Keep ignition OFF and key away from vehicle while working.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is recommended for HID systems and whenever you’re unsure.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" socket extension
- Flathead screwdriver
- Trim clip removal tool
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Low beam bulb (Halogen H11) - Qty: 2
- Low beam bulb (HID D3S xenon capsule) - Qty: 2
- High beam bulb (9005) - Qty: 2
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and switch the headlight switch to OFF.
- Open the hood and use a flashlight to look at the back of each headlamp:
- If you see a metal “ballast/igniter” module or high-voltage warning labels, you likely have HID low beams.
- If it’s just a plastic twist-lock bulb socket, you likely have halogen.
- If HID (or if you want maximum safety), disconnect the battery negative cable:
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet to loosen the negative terminal.
- Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back. Torque to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs) on reassembly.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Make room on the driver side (air intake area)
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Locate the intake duct/resonator near the driver-side headlamp.
- Use a flathead screwdriver to loosen the intake hose clamp (turn counterclockwise).
- If there are push clips, remove them with a trim clip removal tool.
- Remove any 10mm fastener holding the duct/resonator (if equipped) using a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension. Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs) on reassembly.
- Move the duct/resonator just enough to access the bulb caps. Don’t force plastic parts.
Step 2: Make room on the passenger side (washer filler neck)
- Find the washer fluid filler neck by the passenger-side headlamp.
- If it blocks access, remove its retaining fastener with a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet, then lift the neck straight up and set it aside. Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs) on reassembly.
Step 3: Remove the dust cap / access cover
- At the back of the headlamp, locate the round cover behind the bulb you’re replacing.
- Twist the cover counterclockwise by hand. If tight, use a nitrile-gloved hand for grip.
- Set the cover somewhere clean (so no dirt gets inside).
Step 4: Replace the low beam bulb (do left, then right)
- Disconnect the bulb electrical connector by pressing the lock tab and pulling straight back.
- Remove the bulb by twisting it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn, then pull it straight out.
- Install the new low beam bulb:
- Align the bulb tabs with the housing slots.
- Push in fully, then twist clockwise until it locks.
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
- HID note: If your low beam is HID, the rear may have an igniter/connector that locks. Release and re-lock it gently. Never power HID without bulb seated.
Step 5: Replace the high beam bulb (do left, then right)
- Move to the high beam access cover on the same headlamp and remove it (same twist-off method).
- Unplug the connector (press tab, pull straight back).
- Twist the bulb counterclockwise to remove, then install the new bulb clockwise to lock.
- Reconnect the connector until it clicks.
Step 6: Reinstall covers and reassemble what you moved
- Reinstall each dust cap/access cover by aligning and twisting clockwise until fully seated.
- Reinstall the washer filler neck (if removed) using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet. Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs)
- Reinstall the intake duct/resonator and tighten the clamp with a flathead screwdriver.
- Reinstall any 10mm fasteners with a 10mm socket. Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs)
- If you disconnected the battery, reconnect the negative terminal using a 10mm socket. Torque to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs)
✅ After Repair
- Turn the ignition ON and test: low beams, high beams, and auto headlight function (if enabled).
- Check that both dust caps are fully sealed (keeps moisture out of the housing).
- At night, verify the beam pattern looks even side-to-side; if it looks “off,” a bulb may not be seated.
💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
Shop Cost: $140-$350 (parts + labor)
DIY Cost: $30-$260 (parts only, depends on halogen vs HID)
You Save: $110-$200 by doing it yourself!
Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.7-1.2 hours.
