🔧 Outback - Headlight Bulb Replacement
You can replace the headlight bulbs from the engine bay (no bumper removal). The key is getting enough hand space behind each headlight, then swapping the bulb without touching the glass.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours
Assumption: Your Outback uses halogen bulbs (common on 2.5i): low beam = H11, high beam = 9005. Steps below cover replacing both sides for both bulbs.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Let headlights cool 10+ minutes; bulbs get extremely hot.
- ⚠️ Turn the light switch OFF and remove the key/fob from the car.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life. If you touch it, clean with alcohol and a lint-free cloth.
- ⚠️ Recommended: disconnect the negative battery terminal before working near the battery/terminals.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 3/8" ratchet
- 6" socket extension
- 10mm wrench
- Flat trim clip tool
- Flashlight
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Low beam headlight bulb (H11 halogen) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- High beam headlight bulb (9005 halogen) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease (small packet) - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and support it securely.
- Use a 10mm wrench to disconnect the negative battery terminal (the “-” post) and move it aside so it can’t spring back. Prevents accidental short circuits.
- Put on nitrile gloves to keep bulb glass clean.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the bulbs (back of each headlight)
- Use a flashlight to look behind the headlight housing.
- You’ll typically see two bulb positions per side: low beam (H11) and high beam (9005).
Step 2: Replace the passenger-side low beam bulb (H11)
- Reach behind the passenger headlight and remove the rear dust cover (turn/pull by hand).
- Press the connector tab and pull the electrical connector straight off the bulb.
- Rotate the bulb base counterclockwise (about 1/8–1/4 turn) and pull the bulb out.
- Install the new H11 bulb: insert it straight in, then rotate clockwise until it locks.
- Apply a tiny smear of dielectric grease to the connector seal (dielectric grease is a non-conductive grease that helps keep moisture out).
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks, then reinstall the dust cover.
Step 3: Replace the driver-side low beam bulb (H11) (tight access)
- If space is tight, remove the air intake snorkel/clips using a flat trim clip tool (pop the center pin up, then remove the clip).
- If you still can’t fit your hand comfortably, remove the battery hold-down:
- Use a 10mm socket, ratchet, and 6" extension to remove the battery hold-down nuts.
- Lift the hold-down off and carefully shift the battery slightly for room (do not yank cables).
- When reinstalling hold-down nuts: Torque to 7.5 Nm (5.5 ft-lbs).
- Remove the dust cover by hand.
- Disconnect the electrical connector (press tab, pull straight off).
- Rotate the bulb counterclockwise and remove it.
- Install the new H11 bulb and rotate clockwise to lock.
- Reconnect the connector, reinstall the dust cover, and reinstall any snorkel/clips removed.
Step 4: Replace the passenger-side high beam bulb (9005)
- Behind the passenger headlight, locate the high beam bulb (9005) position.
- Remove the dust cover (if equipped) by hand.
- Disconnect the connector (press tab) and pull off.
- Rotate the bulb counterclockwise and remove it.
- Install the new 9005 bulb, rotate clockwise to lock, reconnect the connector, and reinstall the dust cover.
Step 5: Replace the driver-side high beam bulb (9005)
- Use the same access strategy as the driver low beam (snorkel clips, and battery hold-down if needed) using a flat trim clip tool and 10mm socket.
- Remove dust cover (if equipped), unplug connector, twist bulb counterclockwise, remove.
- Install new 9005 bulb, twist clockwise to lock, reconnect connector, reinstall dust cover.
Step 6: Reconnect the battery and reassemble
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench.
- If you removed the battery hold-down, confirm it’s secured: Torque to 7.5 Nm (5.5 ft-lbs).
- Double-check every dust cover is installed and every connector is fully clicked in.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the headlights ON and confirm: both low beams work, both high beams work, and the dash high-beam indicator works.
- Check for flickering (usually means a loose connector or bulb not fully locked).
- At night, verify the beam pattern looks even left-to-right. Uneven often means bulb not seated.
