How to Replace Low Beam (H11) and High Beam (9005) Headlight Bulbs on a 2014 Mazda CX-5
Step-by-step DIY guide with tools list, wheel-well and engine-bay access tips, and safety precautions
🔧 CX-5 - Headlight Bulb Replacement
On your CX-5, the “headlight bulbs” can mean the low beams and/or the high beams. Replacing them is mostly a twist-lock bulb job, but the low beams are usually easiest to access through the wheel-well liner.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5–1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the headlight switch OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool 10+ minutes; they get extremely hot.
- ⚠️ Do not touch halogen bulb glass with bare fingers (skin oil shortens bulb life).
- ⚠️ Support the vehicle securely if you lift it; never rely on a jack alone.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required, but keep tools away from the battery terminals.

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

- High beam headlight bulb (9005) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- Fender liner push clips - Qty: 4-10 (as needed)
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to neutral, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Turn the steering wheel full-lock to the side you’re working on (this makes liner access easier).
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Tip: Replace bulbs in pairs for matching color.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Decide which bulbs you’re replacing (low beam vs high beam)
- Use a flashlight and confirm what’s out: low beams work in normal “headlights on,” high beams work only with the high-beam stalk.
- Plan to replace both left and right of that bulb type.
Step 2: Access the low beam bulb (wheel-well liner method)
- Turn the wheel away from the side you’re working on (example: working on left bulb, turn wheel to the right).
- If access is tight, lift that front corner using a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) and support it with jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Remove the fender liner clips/screws near the headlight area using a trim clip removal tool and a flathead screwdriver (small).
- If a 10mm fastener is present, remove it with a 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet.
- Pull the liner back by hand to create a window to the back of the headlight.
- Trim clip tool = a forked tool that pops plastic clips.
Step 3: Remove and replace the low beam bulb (H11)
- Reach the low beam bulb socket at the rear of the headlight.
- Unplug the electrical connector by pressing the lock tab (use a flathead screwdriver (small) gently only if needed).
- Rotate the bulb counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand and pull it straight out.
- Install the new Low beam headlight bulb (H11) without touching the glass (keep nitrile gloves on).
- Lock it in by rotating clockwise until it stops, then reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
Step 4: Reassemble the fender liner
- Reposition the liner and reinstall clips using the trim clip removal tool (to hold/align) and hand pressure to seat them.
- If you removed a bolt, reinstall it with a 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet (snug, do not over-tighten).
- If lifted, lower the vehicle safely using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
Step 5: Access the high beam bulb (engine bay method)
- Open the hood and use a flashlight to find the high beam bulb at the rear of the headlight assembly.
- Clear any nearby wiring from your hand path (no tools needed).
Step 6: Remove and replace the high beam bulb (9005)
- Unplug the electrical connector by pressing the lock tab (use a flathead screwdriver (small) gently only if needed).
- Rotate the bulb counterclockwise about 1/4 turn and pull it out.
- Install the new High beam headlight bulb (9005) with nitrile gloves on, then rotate clockwise to lock.
- Reconnect the connector until it clicks.
Step 7: Repeat on the other side
- Use the same method on the opposite headlight so both sides match in brightness and color.
âś… After Repair
- Turn the headlights on and confirm both low beams work.
- Switch on high beams and confirm both high beams work.
- Walk around and verify no fender liner rubbing or loose clips.
- If a bulb doesn’t light: recheck the connector click and bulb lock position.
