🔧 Terrain - Headlight Bulb Replacement

On your Terrain, the low-beam and high-beam bulbs are accessed from behind the headlight housing inside the engine bay. You’ll remove the electrical connector, twist the bulb socket out, and install the new bulbs without touching the glass.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and let bulbs cool before touching them.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch halogen bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Keep keys out of the vehicle so the lights can’t turn on automatically.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required, but avoid shorting connectors with tools.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Flat-blade screwdriver (small)
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 1/4" extension (3"-6")
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulb (halogen) - Qty: 2
  • High beam headlight bulb (halogen) - Qty: 2
  • Dielectric grease (electrical) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlight switch to OFF and remove the key.
  • Open the hood and use a flashlight to locate the rear of each headlight assembly.
  • Tip: Replace bulbs in pairs for even brightness.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Identify the low-beam and high-beam access points

  • Use a flashlight to look behind the headlight housing.
  • You’ll see two bulb sockets with wiring connectors (one for low beam, one for high beam).
  • Tip: Take a quick photo before unplugging anything.

Step 2: Create working room (if needed)

  • If the air duct or cover blocks your hand, remove fasteners with a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 1/4" extension (3"-6").
  • If there are plastic push-clips, lift them out with a trim clip removal tool (this tool pops plastic clips out without breaking them).
  • If a clip is stubborn, gently pry with a flat-blade screwdriver (small).

Step 3: Unplug the bulb connector

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Press the connector lock tab and pull the connector straight off the bulb socket by hand.
  • If it’s tight, gently help it with a flat-blade screwdriver (small) on the tab (don’t pry on the wires).

Step 4: Remove the old bulb

  • Grip the bulb base and twist it counterclockwise about a quarter-turn, then pull it straight out.
  • Use a flashlight to confirm the bulb’s alignment tabs so you can match them on install.

Step 5: Install the new bulb (low beam or high beam)

  • With nitrile gloves on, insert the new bulb straight into the housing with the tabs aligned.
  • Twist clockwise to lock it in place.
  • Apply a tiny dab of dielectric grease (electrical) to the inside of the connector seal (optional but helps prevent corrosion).
  • Push the connector on until it clicks.
  • Tip: If you touched the glass, clean with alcohol.

Step 6: Repeat for the other beam and the other headlight

  • Use the same steps for the second bulb on that side (high/low), then move to the other headlight.
  • Reinstall any ducting/covers you removed using the 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and trim clip removal tool.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the headlights ON and verify both low beams work.
  • Switch to high beams and verify both high beams work.
  • Walk around and confirm both sides match in color and brightness.
  • If a bulb doesn’t light, turn lights OFF and reseat the connector and bulb twist-lock.
