📋 Before You Begin

• Park on a level surface and set the parking brake.
• Make sure the engine is cool.
• Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging any coils.
• If you are replacing one coil only, move one cylinder at a time so the connectors do not get mixed up.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect power

• Use a 10mm socket to remove the negative battery cable.
• Move the cable aside so it cannot touch the battery post again.

Step 2: Remove the engine cover

• Pull up evenly on the engine cover to remove it.
• If it feels stuck, use your hands and lift straight up.

Step 3: Access the coil area

• On the 5.3L V8, the ignition coils sit on top of the valve covers.
• If any intake ducting blocks access, remove it with a flat-blade screwdriver or trim clip removal tool as needed.

Step 4: Unplug the ignition coil

• Use your fingers to release the connector tab on the coil.
• Pull the connector straight off the coil.
• Do not pry hard on the connector.

Step 5: Remove the coil retaining bolt

• Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to remove the coil bolt.
• Lift the coil straight up and off the spark plug.
• Twist gently if the boot is stuck.

Step 6: Install the new coil

• Apply a small amount of dielectric grease inside the coil boot.
• Set the new coil straight onto the spark plug.
• Install the retaining bolt by hand first, then tighten it with a torque wrench.
• Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).

Step 7: Reconnect the coil

• Push the electrical connector onto the coil until it clicks.
• Make sure the connector is fully seated and locked.

Step 8: Repeat for other coils

• Repeat Steps 4 through 7 for each coil you are replacing.
• Keep each connector and coil in the same cylinder location if you are only replacing some of them.

Step 9: Reinstall covers and restore power

• Reinstall any intake ducting you removed.
• Press the engine cover back into place.
• Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.

• Start the engine and listen for a smooth idle.
• Check that the check-engine light is off.
• If the light stays on, clear codes with a scan tool and recheck for misfires.
• Take a short test drive and confirm normal acceleration.
