🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the engine cover

• Grip the engine cover at the corners and pull straight up to release the rubber grommets.
• If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim tool to gently pry upward at a corner. Pull up, not sideways.

Step 2: Unplug the ignition coil electrical connector

• Pick one coil to start with (work one cylinder at a time).
• Use a flashlight to see the connector lock/tab.
• Release the lock by hand; if it’s tight, use needle-nose pliers gently on the tab (do not crush it).
• Pull the connector straight off the coil. Never yank the wires.

Step 3: Remove the ignition coil

• On your Tiguan, the coil is a push-in style (no coil hold-down bolts).
• Hook the coil with the ignition coil puller (specialty) and pull straight upward while wiggling lightly.
• If you don’t have a puller, you can try careful upward wiggle by hand, but avoid prying on the valve cover.

Step 4: Install the new ignition coil

• Compare the new coil to the old one to make sure the connector and boot match.
• Apply a very thin film of dielectric grease inside the rubber boot (the part that seals around the spark plug). Dielectric grease is non-conductive grease that helps prevent moisture and makes future removal easier.
• Push the new coil straight down onto the spark plug until it fully seats (you’ll feel it “bottom out”).

Step 5: Reconnect the electrical connector

• Push the connector on by hand until it clicks/locks into place.
• Gently tug the connector to confirm it’s latched.

Step 6: Repeat for the remaining coils

• Repeat Steps 2–5 for the other 3 cylinders, one at a time to avoid mixing connectors.

Step 7: Reinstall the engine cover

• Line up the cover with the mounting points.
• Press down firmly at each corner until it snaps into the grommets.

• Start the engine and let it idle for 1–2 minutes. It should run smooth with no shaking.
• If the check-engine light was on, use a scan tool to clear codes and confirm no misfire codes return.
• Take a short test drive and verify there’s no hesitation under light acceleration.
