🔧 Kona - Ignition Coil Replacement

Your Kona’s ignition coils sit on top of the engine and send high voltage to the spark plugs. Replacing a weak coil can fix misfires, rough idle, and flashing check-engine light.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a fully cool engine to avoid burns.
  • Keep water and oil out of the spark plug wells (the deep holes under the coils).
  • If you disconnect the battery, use a 10mm wrench and remove the negative terminal first.
  • Do not pull on wiring—always release the connector lock tab first.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 3" extension for 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 10mm combination wrench
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Torque wrench (inch-pound or low-range Nm)
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Ignition coil - Qty: 1
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and turn the ignition fully off.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool completely.
  • Optional but recommended: disconnect the battery negative terminal using a 10mm wrench.
  • Replace coils one-by-one to avoid mixing connectors.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the engine cover (if equipped)

  • Grip the cover firmly and pull upward to release the push-in grommets.
  • Set the cover aside where it won’t get stepped on.

Step 2: Locate the ignition coils

  • Find the row of coils on top of the engine, each with an electrical connector and a single hold-down bolt.
  • Identify the coil you’re replacing (for example, cylinder 1 is typically on the belt/chain end of the engine).

Step 3: Unplug the coil connector

  • Use a small flathead screwdriver to gently lift the lock tab if it’s stubborn (don’t break it).
  • Pull the connector straight off the coil.

Step 4: Remove the coil hold-down bolt

  • Use a 10mm socket, 3" extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the bolt.
  • Place the bolt somewhere safe so it can’t fall into the engine bay.

Step 5: Remove the ignition coil

  • Twist the coil slightly left-right to unstick the boot, then pull straight up.
  • If the coil feels glued in place, keep twisting gently—don’t pry hard on plastic parts.

Step 6: Prep and install the new coil

  • Apply a tiny smear of dielectric grease inside the rubber boot (this helps sealing and future removal).
  • Push the new coil straight down until you feel it fully seat on the spark plug.
  • Install the hold-down bolt by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten with a torque wrench (a torque wrench is a tool that tightens bolts to an exact setting): Torque to 9.8 Nm (7 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Reconnect the coil connector

  • Push the connector on until it clicks/locks.
  • Gently tug to confirm it’s secure.

Step 8: Reinstall the engine cover

  • Line up the cover grommets and press down firmly until it snaps into place.

✅ After Repair

  • If you disconnected the battery, reconnect it using a 10mm wrench (negative terminal last removed, first reinstalled).
  • Start the engine and let it idle for 1-2 minutes. It should run smooth.
  • Road test for 10 minutes and confirm no hesitation or flashing check-engine light.
  • If the check-engine light was on, clear codes with a scan tool and confirm the misfire code does not return.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $180-$450 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $50-$320 (parts only, depends if replacing 1 or all)

You Save: $100-$250 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
