🔧 Ignition Coils - Replacement

Your Camry uses four individual ignition coils mounted on top of the engine. Replacing them is straightforward once the engine cover is removed, and the job is usually done when you have misfire codes, rough idle, or an aging coil that has failed.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Let the engine cool fully before starting. Coil packs sit on the cylinder head and can be hot.
  • Turn the ignition OFF and keep the key/fob away from the car while working.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal if you want the safest setup. This is recommended for beginners.
  • Do not pull on the coil wiring harness. Release the connector lock first.
  • If a coil boot tears or oil is found in the spark plug tube, stop and inspect the valve cover seal area.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4-inch ratchet
  • 6-inch extension
  • Trim panel tool
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Torque wrench
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Ignition coil - Qty: 4
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Make sure the engine is cool to the touch.
  • If you disconnect the battery, save radio presets first if needed.
  • Have the new coils ready so each one can go back into the same cylinder area if you are diagnosing a misfire.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the hood and remove the engine cover

  • Use your hands to lift the plastic engine cover straight up from the mounting grommets.
  • Set it aside in a safe place.

Step 2: Disconnect the battery if you chose to do so

  • Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to loosen the negative battery terminal.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back and touch the post.
  • Keep the cable away from metal.

Step 3: Release the ignition coil connectors

  • Locate the four coil connectors on top of the engine.
  • Use your fingers or needle-nose pliers if needed to release each connector lock.
  • Pull each connector straight off the coil. Do not yank on the wires.

Step 4: Remove the coil hold-down bolts

  • Use a 10mm socket, 6-inch extension, and 1/4-inch ratchet to remove the coil bolts.
  • Keep the bolts organized so they go back in the same spots.

Step 5: Remove the old ignition coils

  • Twist each coil slightly, then pull it straight up.
  • If a coil feels stuck, wiggle gently. Do not pry hard on the valve cover.
  • Inspect the coil boots for cracks, burns, or oil contamination.

Step 6: Install the new ignition coils

  • Apply a small amount of dielectric grease inside each coil boot.
  • Install each new coil straight down into its spark plug tube.
  • Reinstall the coil bolts by hand first.
  • Use a torque wrench to tighten each coil bolt to 8.5 Nm (75 in-lbs).
  • Snug is enough here.

Step 7: Reconnect the coil connectors

  • Push each electrical connector onto its coil until it clicks.
  • Give each connector a light tug to make sure it is locked.

Step 8: Reinstall the engine cover and battery cable

  • Press the engine cover back onto its mounting points.
  • If disconnected, reinstall the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Tighten the terminal securely, but do not over-tighten.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • Check for a smooth idle and no warning lights.
  • If you had a misfire code, clear it with a scan tool if it does not go away on its own.
  • Test drive gently and confirm the engine pulls smoothly under light acceleration.
  • If the misfire returns, the spark plugs or a wiring issue may also need inspection.
