🔧 Equinox - Ignition Coil Replacement
You’ll be removing the engine cover, unplugging the ignition coils, and swapping them out one by one on your Equinox. This restores strong spark to the engine and can fix misfires, rough running, or coil trouble codes.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5–1 hour
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Let the engine cool completely before starting; hot parts can burn you.
- ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF and remove the key from the vehicle before unplugging coils.
- ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable to avoid accidental short circuits.
- ⚠️ Do not pull on the coil wires; always use the plastic connectors.
- ⚠️ Keep metal tools away from the battery positive terminal to avoid sparks.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 🛠️ 10mm socket
- 🛠️ 8mm socket
- 🛠️ 1/4" drive ratchet
- 🛠️ 1/4" drive extension (3"-6")
- 🛠️ Flathead screwdriver (small)
- 🛠️ Torque wrench (inch-pound, 30–150 in-lb range)
- 🛠️ Fender cover or clean towel
- 🛠️ Mechanic’s gloves
- 🛠️ Safety glasses
- 🛠️ OBD2 scan tool (basic)
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- 🔩 Ignition coil set (1.5L, coil-on-plug) - Qty: 4 (replace all four together)
- 🔩 Dielectric grease (spark plug boot grease) - Qty: 1 tube
- 🔩 Battery terminal protector spray - Qty: 1 (optional)
- 🔩 Spark plug set (iridium, 1.5L) - Qty: 4 (optional but recommended if high mileage)
📋 Before You Begin
- 📝 Park the Equinox on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- 📝 Turn the engine off and remove the key from the ignition.
- 📝 Open the hood and secure it with the hood prop rod.
- 📝 Note or print any misfire codes from your scan tool before clearing them.
- 📝 Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket and move it aside so it cannot spring back.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove engine cover
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove any bolts or nuts holding the plastic engine cover, if equipped.
- Lift the engine cover straight up; some covers just pull off rubber grommets with a firm tug.
- Set the cover aside in a safe place.
Step 2: Locate the ignition coils
- The ignition coils sit on top of the engine, directly above each spark plug, usually in a row along the top of the valve cover.
- You should see four small rectangular coils, each with a wiring connector and a long boot going down into the engine.
- Work on one coil at a time to avoid mix-ups.
Step 3: Disconnect the electrical connector from the first coil
- On the first coil, use a small flathead screwdriver to gently lift or press the locking tab on the electrical connector.
- While holding the tab, pull the connector straight back by hand; do not yank the wires.
- Move the connector slightly aside so you have clear access to the coil.
Step 4: Remove the coil retaining bolt
- Use an 8mm socket with your 1/4" drive ratchet and extension to remove the small bolt holding the coil to the valve cover.
- Turn the bolt counterclockwise until it comes out; keep the bolt somewhere safe, like a small tray.
- Do not drop the bolt into the engine bay.
Step 5: Remove the ignition coil
- Grip the top of the coil firmly by hand.
- Twist it gently left and right to loosen the rubber boot seal.
- Pull the coil straight up to remove it from the spark plug well.
- Inspect the boot for oil or moisture; if you see oil, the valve cover gasket may need attention later.
Step 6: Prepare the new ignition coil
- Take a small amount of dielectric grease on a clean finger or swab.
- Rub a thin film inside the rubber boot of the new coil where it will sit on the spark plug.
- Only a thin smear is needed, not a big glob.
Step 7: Install the new ignition coil
- Align the new coil with the spark plug hole and wiring connector side facing the same way as the old one.
- Push the coil down firmly so the boot seats onto the spark plug.
- Install the coil retaining bolt by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the 8mm socket and ratchet to snug the bolt, then torque it with the inch-pound torque wrench to 10 N·m (89 in-lb).
Step 8: Reconnect the electrical connector
- Push the coil’s electrical connector straight on until you hear or feel a click.
- Lightly tug the connector to confirm it is locked in place.
Step 9: Repeat for the remaining three coils
- Move to the next coil and repeat Steps 3–8 for each of the remaining coils.
- Always remove and replace one coil at a time to keep wiring organized.
- If you are also changing spark plugs, that would be done when each coil is removed, before installing the new coil.
Step 10: Reinstall engine cover
- Position the engine cover back over the engine, lining up the mounting points or grommets.
- Press down firmly to seat it on any rubber grommets.
- If bolts are used, install them with a 10mm socket and ratchet and snug them gently. No specific high torque is required; do not overtighten.
Step 11: Reconnect the battery
- Reattach the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
- Tighten the clamp bolt snugly; do not over-torque and deform the terminal. A good target is about 7–9 N·m (62–80 in-lb).
✅ After Repair
- 🧪 Start the engine and let it idle. It should run smoothly without shaking or misfiring.
- 🧪 Use your OBD2 scan tool to clear any stored misfire or coil-related codes.
- 🧪 Take a short test drive around your area, checking for smooth acceleration and no warning lights.
- 🧪 After the drive, recheck under the hood to confirm all connectors are secure and nothing is loose.
💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
Shop Cost: $280–$450 (parts + labor)
