🔧 Equinox - Ignition Coil Replacement

You’ll remove the engine cover, unplug each ignition coil, unbolt them, and swap in new coils. This restores proper spark if you have misfires or coil-related trouble codes.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5–1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🔋 Always turn the engine off and remove the key before working under the hood.
  • 🧤 Allow the engine to cool fully; hot parts can burn you.
  • ⚡ Do not pull coils with the engine running; you can get shocked and damage electronics.
  • 🔧 Disconnect the negative battery cable if you are nervous about electrical work or may touch metal tools to electrical connectors.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 🧰 10mm socket
  • 🧰 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 🧰 1/4" drive extension (3"–6")
  • 🧰 Torque wrench (inch-lb, 20–100 in-lb range)
  • 🧰 Flat trim tool or plastic pry tool
  • 🧰 Small flathead screwdriver
  • 🧰 Dielectric grease packet
  • 🧰 Shop towels
  • 🧰 Mechanic gloves
  • 🧰 Safety glasses
  • 🧰 OBD2 scan tool (basic)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 🔩 Ignition coil pack (1.5L, individual coil) - Qty: 4 (Replace all four for best reliability)
  • 🔩 Dielectric grease - Qty: 1 small tube
  • 🔩 Engine cover mounting clips (if any break) - Qty: 2–4
  • 🔩 Anti-corrosion battery terminal spray - Qty: 1 (optional)

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Equinox on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🔌 Turn the ignition off and remove the key from the vehicle.
  • 🔋 If you choose to disconnect the battery: use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative (-) terminal and move the cable aside so it cannot spring back.
  • 📷 Take a quick photo of the top of the engine so you remember how everything should look when reassembled.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the hood and locate the ignition coils

  • Pull the hood release handle inside the cabin, then lift the hood and secure it with the prop rod.
  • The ignition coils sit on top of the engine, in a row, each on top of a spark plug.
  • On the 1.5L engine, they are under the plastic engine cover in the center of the engine bay.

Step 2: Remove the plastic engine cover

  • Use your hands to gently pull up at the corners of the engine cover; it is held by rubber grommets that pop off small posts.
  • If it feels stuck, use a flat trim tool near a grommet point and pry gently upward.
  • Lift the cover off and set it aside somewhere safe.
  • Pull straight up to avoid cracking the cover

Step 3: Disconnect the ignition coil electrical connectors

  • Starting at one end of the engine, locate the first coil’s electrical connector.
  • Use a small flathead screwdriver to gently lift the plastic lock tab on the connector while pulling the connector straight back by hand.
  • Do not pull on the wires themselves; only pull the plastic connector body.
  • Repeat for all four ignition coils, one by one.
  • Unplug and change coils one at a time

Step 4: Remove the ignition coil mounting bolts

  • Each coil is held in place by a small bolt at the top.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and extension to remove the bolt from the first coil.
  • Set the bolt aside safely; you will reuse it.
  • Repeat on the remaining coils.

Step 5: Remove the ignition coils

  • Grip the first coil by its top and twist it gently left and right to break the seal.
  • Pull the coil straight up and out of the spark plug well.
  • If it resists, keep gently twisting while pulling upward; do not use metal tools to pry on the plastic.
  • Inspect the rubber boot for oil or heavy corrosion. If you see engine oil in the spark plug well, the valve cover gasket may be leaking and should be addressed later.
  • Repeat for all coils if you are replacing the full set.

Step 6: Prepare the new ignition coils

  • Compare each new coil to the old one: same shape, same connector, same mounting point.
  • Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease inside the rubber boot at the end of the new coil. This helps prevent moisture and makes future removal easier.
  • Use only a thin film of grease

Step 7: Install the new ignition coils

  • Insert the first new coil into the spark plug well, lining up the rubber boot with the spark plug.
  • Press down firmly until you feel the boot fully seat on the plug.
  • Align the mounting hole on the coil with the threaded hole in the valve cover.
  • Install the original bolt by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use the 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet to snug the bolt lightly.
  • Once snug, use a torque wrench (inch-lb) with a 10mm socket to tighten the bolt to 8–10 Nm (71–89 in-lb).
  • Repeat these steps for each coil you are replacing.

Step 8: Reconnect the ignition coil connectors

  • Push the electrical connector straight onto the first coil until it clicks into place.
  • Lightly tug to make sure it is locked on.
  • Repeat for all four coils.
  • No connector should feel loose or wobbly

Step 9: Reinstall the engine cover

  • Position the plastic engine cover back over the engine, lining up the holes on the underside with the rubber grommets on the engine.
  • Press down firmly at each corner until you feel or hear it snap into place.
  • If any grommet or clip came off the cover and stayed on the engine, move it back into the cover before reinstalling.

Step 10: Reconnect the battery (if disconnected)

  • Place the negative (-) battery cable back on the negative terminal.
  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to tighten the clamp until it is snug and does not move.
  • Do not overtighten; just firm enough so it cannot rotate by hand.

✅ After Repair

  • 🚗 Start the engine and let it idle. It should run smoothly with no shaking or misfire feeling.
  • 💡 Watch the instrument cluster: the check engine light should go off after a few drive cycles if the misfire is fixed, or you can clear the codes with a OBD2 scan tool.
  • 🛣️ Take a short test drive, gently accelerating and cruising. Confirm there is no hesitation or loss of power.
  • 📟 If the check engine light stays on or flashes, scan for trouble codes again; there may be another issue such as a bad spark plug or fuel injector.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $280–$450 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $140–$220 (parts only, full set of coils)

You Save: $140–$230 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100–$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5–1.0 hour.
