🔧 Ignition Coils - Replacement

The ignition coils on your Land Cruiser sit on top of the spark plugs and send high voltage to each cylinder. If one fails, you may get a misfire, rough idle, poor fuel economy, or a check engine light.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Let the engine cool completely before starting. Coils and nearby parts can stay hot.
  • Turn the ignition OFF and keep the key/fob away from the vehicle.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging coils. This helps prevent electrical damage.
  • Use care around the coil connectors. Do not pull on the wires.
  • If you find oil in the spark plug wells, fix the leak first. New coils can fail early if oil contamination stays in the wells.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • 6-inch extension
  • Torque wrench
  • Flat-blade trim tool
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Dielectric grease
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Ignition coil set - Qty: 8
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on a level surface and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool fully.
  • Open the hood and remove the engine cover if equipped.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the engine cover and intake ducting

  • Use a flat-blade trim tool to lift off the engine cover if it is clipped on.
  • If the intake duct blocks access, loosen the clamps with a 10mm socket and remove the duct.
  • Keep hardware grouped together.

Step 2: Disconnect the battery

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the negative battery cable.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back onto the terminal.

Step 3: Unplug the ignition coil electrical connectors

  • Work one coil at a time so you do not mix up connectors.
  • Press the connector lock tab, then pull the connector straight off by hand.
  • If a connector is tight, use needle-nose pliers gently on the connector body, not the wire.

Step 4: Remove the ignition coil hold-down bolts

  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to remove each coil bolt.
  • Lift each coil straight up and out of the spark plug tube.
  • Torque to 8 N·m (71 in-lbs) on installation.

Step 5: Install the new ignition coils

  • Compare the new coil to the old one before installing.
  • Apply a small amount of dielectric grease inside each coil boot. This is a silicone grease that helps the boot seal and makes future removal easier.
  • Push each coil straight down until it seats fully on the spark plug.
  • Install the hold-down bolt by hand first, then tighten with a torque wrench to 8 N·m (71 in-lbs).

Step 6: Reconnect the coil connectors

  • Push each connector on until it clicks.
  • Give each one a light tug to confirm it is locked.

Step 7: Reinstall intake parts and engine cover

  • Reinstall the intake duct and tighten the clamps with a 10mm socket.
  • Reinstall the engine cover by pressing it down into place.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • Listen for a smooth idle and check for the check engine light.
  • If the light was on before, clear codes with a scan tool and confirm the misfire is gone.
  • Test drive gently and verify normal power delivery.
  • If a misfire remains, inspect the spark plugs and wiring next.
