🔧 Grand Cherokee - Ignition Coil Replacement
Replacing the ignition coils on your Grand Cherokee means removing the engine cover, accessing the coil packs on top of the 3.6L V6, unplugging each coil, and installing the new coils. Ignition coils create the high voltage needed for the spark plugs, and a weak coil can cause misfires, rough idle, poor acceleration, or a check engine light.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Let the engine cool fully before starting; the intake manifold and cylinder heads can stay hot.
- ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental electrical shorts.
- ⚠️ Do not pull on wiring. Always press the connector lock and pull from the connector body.
- ⚠️ Work one ignition coil at a time if you are new to repairs. This helps prevent mixing up parts or connectors.
- ⚠️ Keep dirt and debris out of the spark plug wells. Debris can fall into the engine when spark plugs are removed later.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 8mm socket
- 3/8-inch drive ratchet
- 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension
- Small flat-head screwdriver
- Torque wrench inch-pound range
- Plastic trim removal tool
- Compressed air nozzle
- Mechanic gloves
- Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Ignition coil - Qty: 1-6
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1 small tube
Tip: Replace all six if mileage is high.
📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Grand Cherokee on level ground and shift the transmission into Park.
- Set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and let the engine cool completely.
- Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable. Move the cable aside so it cannot touch the battery post.
- An ignition coil is the black electrical part mounted above each spark plug. Each cylinder has one coil.
- Dielectric grease is a non-conductive silicone grease that helps seal moisture out of the coil boot.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the Engine Cover
- Use both hands to lift the plastic engine cover straight upward.
- If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently lift near the rubber mounting points.
- Set the cover aside in a safe place.
- Pull straight up, not sideways.
Step 2: Locate the Ignition Coils
- Look along the top sides of the 3.6L V6 engine for the ignition coils.
- Each coil has an electrical connector and one small mounting bolt.
- Use compressed air nozzle to blow dust away from the coil area before removal.
- Wear safety glasses when using compressed air.
Step 3: Disconnect the First Coil Connector
- Use a small flat-head screwdriver to gently release the connector lock if it is tight.
- Press the connector tab and pull the connector straight off the ignition coil.
- Do not pry hard on the connector. The plastic can become brittle with age.
- Never pull by the wires.
Step 4: Remove the Ignition Coil Bolt
- Use an 8mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension to remove the coil mounting bolt.
- Keep the bolt in a small safe place so it does not fall into the engine bay.
Step 5: Remove the Old Ignition Coil
- Grip the ignition coil body by hand and twist it gently left and right.
- Pull the coil straight upward to remove it from the spark plug well.
- If the rubber boot sticks, continue twisting gently while pulling upward.
- Inspect the old coil boot for oil, cracking, burn marks, or moisture.
Step 6: Prepare the New Ignition Coil
- Apply a very small amount of dielectric grease inside the end of the new coil boot.
- Do not fill the boot with grease. A thin film is enough.
- Compare the new ignition coil to the old one before installing it.
Step 7: Install the New Ignition Coil
- Push the new ignition coil straight down into the spark plug well by hand.
- You should feel it seat onto the spark plug.
- Make sure the bolt hole lines up with the mounting point.
Step 8: Tighten the Ignition Coil Bolt
- Start the coil bolt by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Use an 8mm socket and torque wrench inch-pound range to tighten the bolt.
- Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs)
- Do not overtighten. The mounting area can crack.
Step 9: Reconnect the Coil Connector
- Push the electrical connector onto the ignition coil until it clicks.
- Lightly tug the connector by hand to confirm it is locked.
Step 10: Repeat for the Remaining Coils
- Use the same 8mm socket, ratchet, extension, and torque wrench to replace any other ignition coils.
- Work one coil at a time to avoid confusion.
- If only replacing one failed coil, make sure it matches the misfire cylinder identified during diagnosis.
Step 11: Reinstall the Engine Cover
- Line up the plastic engine cover with its rubber mounting points.
- Press straight down by hand until it snaps into place.
Step 12: Reconnect the Battery
- Use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery cable.
- Tighten the terminal snugly. Do not overtighten.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)
✅ After Repair
- Start your Grand Cherokee and let it idle for 1-2 minutes.
- Listen for smooth idle and check that the engine does not shake.
- If the check engine light was on, a scan tool may be needed to clear stored misfire codes.
- Test drive gently for 10-15 minutes and confirm normal acceleration.
- If a misfire remains, the spark plug, injector, wiring, or compression may need diagnosis.
