🔧 Civic - Ignition Coil Replacement

Ignition coils sit on top of the engine and create the high voltage needed for the spark plugs to fire. Replacing a weak or failed coil can fix misfires, rough running, and a flashing check-engine light.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

Assumption: your Civic has the 2.0L engine with coil-on-plug coils.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cool engine to avoid burns.
  • ⚠️ Keep keys away from the car while you work.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental shorts.
  • ⚠️ Do not pull on wiring; press the connector tab and pull the plug body.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 6" extension (1/4" drive)
  • Torque wrench (in-lb or low-range ft-lb)
  • Flat trim tool
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Ignition coil - Qty: 1 (or Qty: 4 if replacing all)
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and turn the ignition fully OFF.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool down.
  • Disconnect the battery negative terminal using a 10mm socket, then tuck the cable aside so it can’t spring back.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the engine cover (if equipped)

  • Use a flat trim tool to gently lift up the cover corners if it’s held by rubber grommets.
  • Lift the cover straight up and set it aside.

Step 2: Locate the ignition coils

  • You’ll see 4 identical coils lined up on top of the engine.
  • Each coil has an electrical connector and one small hold-down bolt.

Step 3: Unplug the coil electrical connector

  • Press the connector lock tab with your thumb (or gently with a flat trim tool), then pull the connector straight back.
  • If stuck, wiggle gently—don’t yank wires.

Step 4: Remove the coil hold-down bolt

  • Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" extension to remove the bolt.
  • Put the bolt somewhere safe so it doesn’t fall into the engine bay.

Step 5: Pull the ignition coil out

  • Grip the coil body and twist it a little left/right to break the seal.
  • Pull straight upward to remove it from the spark plug tube.

Step 6: Prep and install the new coil

  • Apply a very small smear of dielectric grease inside the rubber boot (this helps prevent moisture and makes future removal easier).
  • Slide the new coil straight down until it fully seats.

Step 7: Reinstall the hold-down bolt

  • Thread the bolt in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten using a torque wrench: Torque to 12 Nm (9 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Reconnect the electrical connector

  • Push the connector on until it clicks/locks.

Step 9: Repeat for the remaining coils (if replacing more than one)

  • Do one coil at a time so nothing gets mixed up.

Step 10: Reinstall the engine cover and reconnect the battery

  • Press the cover back into place by hand.
  • Reconnect the battery negative terminal using a 10mm socket.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and listen for smooth idle (no shaking).
  • If you had a check-engine light from a misfire, use a scan tool to clear codes and confirm they do not return.
  • Take a short test drive and recheck that the engine runs smoothly under light and moderate acceleration.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $180-$450 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $40-$280 (parts only)

You Save: $140-$170 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
