🔧 Rogue - Ignition Coil Replacement

You’ll be replacing the ignition coils on top of the engine of your Rogue. These coils sit on each spark plug and can cause misfires, rough running, or a Check Engine light when they fail. The job is straightforward and mostly involves removing plastic covers, unplugging connectors, and unbolting the coils.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1–1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Always work on a cool engine. Hot engine parts can burn you.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery terminal to avoid short circuits and accidental starts.
  • ⚠️ Keep metal tools away from the battery positive terminal to prevent sparks.
  • ⚠️ Do not pull on ignition coil wires; always use the plastic connector body.
  • ⚠️ Work in a well-ventilated area and avoid open flames or smoking near fuel vapors.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 🛠️ 10mm socket
  • 🛠️ 8mm socket
  • 🛠️ 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 🛠️ 1/4" drive extension (3"–6")
  • 🛠️ Flathead screwdriver (medium)
  • 🛠️ Torque wrench (inch-pound or low-range ft-lb)
  • 🛠️ Needle-nose pliers
  • 🛠️ Shop rags
  • 🛠️ Disposable gloves
  • 🛠️ Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 🔩 Ignition coil set (QR25DE engine, 4 coils) - Qty: 1 set (Replace all 4 recommended)
  • 🔩 Engine cover clips (if any are damaged) - Qty: 2–4
  • 🔩 Dielectric grease (for coil boots, optional) - Qty: 1 small tube
  • 🔩 Battery terminal cleaning brush (optional) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Rogue on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key, or switch off and take the key fob away from the vehicle.
  • Open the hood and support it with the hood prop rod.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket and move the cable end aside so it cannot spring back.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the plastic engine cover

  • If your Rogue has a plastic engine cover on top, remove it to expose the ignition coils.
  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to remove any visible bolts holding the cover.
  • Lift the cover straight up; some versions use rubber grommets that just pull off.
  • Set the cover aside somewhere clean.

Step 2: Identify the ignition coils

  • You have 4 ignition coils on top of the engine, each sitting directly over a spark plug.
  • They are black plastic units with a small electrical connector on top and a single bolt holding each one down.
  • Plan to replace coils one at a time to avoid confusion.

Step 3: Unplug the electrical connector from the first coil

  • Pick one coil (for example, the one closest to the front of the vehicle).
  • Press down on the plastic locking tab of the connector with your thumb or a flathead screwdriver.
  • While holding the tab down, gently pull the connector straight off the coil. Do not pull on the wires.
  • If the tab is stiff, use needle-nose pliers carefully to help squeeze it.

Step 4: Remove the coil retaining bolt

  • Use a 10mm socket, extension, and ratchet to remove the small bolt holding the coil to the valve cover.
  • Turn counterclockwise to loosen and remove the bolt; set it aside in a safe place.
  • Do not drop the bolt into the engine bay.

Step 5: Remove the ignition coil

  • Grasp the ignition coil body and gently twist it left and right to break any seal at the spark plug tube.
  • Pull the coil straight up and out of the spark plug well.
  • Inspect the coil boot (rubber end) for oil or heavy corrosion; oil can indicate a valve cover gasket leak.

Step 6: Prep and install the new coil

  • Compare the old coil to the new one to confirm same shape and connector position.
  • If you have dielectric grease, place a very thin smear inside the rubber boot of the new coil. Dielectric grease is a non-conductive grease that helps prevent moisture and makes future removal easier.
  • Insert the new coil into the spark plug well, aligning the boot with the spark plug.
  • Press down until the coil seats fully on the plug and the mounting hole lines up with the threaded hole in the valve cover.

Step 7: Reinstall and torque the coil bolt

  • Thread the original 10mm bolt in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use the 10mm socket, extension, and ratchet to snug the bolt.
  • Then use a torque wrench with the 10mm socket to tighten the bolt to 8 N·m (71 in-lb, about 6 ft-lb).
  • Do not over-tighten; the threads are in aluminum.

Step 8: Reconnect the electrical connector

  • Push the electrical connector straight onto the top of the new coil.
  • Listen and feel for a “click” from the locking tab engaging.
  • Gently tug the connector to confirm it is locked in place.

Step 9: Repeat for the remaining coils

  • Move to the next coil and repeat Steps 3–8 for each of the remaining three coils.
  • Always fully finish one coil (unplug, unbolt, remove, install new, bolt, reconnect) before starting the next.
  • Replacing all 4 together helps prevent future misfires.

Step 10: Reinstall the engine cover

  • Place the plastic engine cover back over the engine, aligning any rubber grommets or bolt holes.
  • Use the 10mm socket and ratchet to reinstall the cover bolts.
  • Tighten them snugly by hand; no specific torque is required, but do not overtighten and crack the plastic.

Step 11: Reconnect the battery

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery post.
  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to tighten the clamp until it is snug and does not move by hand.
  • Do not overtighten to avoid damaging the clamp.

✅ After Repair

  • Start your Rogue and let it idle. It should run smoothly without misfires or shaking.
  • Watch the dashboard for any warning lights. If the Check Engine light remains on, you may need an OBD-II scan tool to clear stored codes, or there may be another issue.
  • Lightly rev the engine a few times to confirm stable operation.
  • Take a short test drive, checking for smooth acceleration and no hesitation.
  • After the drive, open the hood and double-check that all connectors are fully seated and there are no loose tools or parts left behind.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $350–$550 (parts + labor) for all 4 coils

DIY Cost: $120–$220 (parts only, full set of 4 coils)

You Save: $230–$330 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates typically run $100–$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.8–1.0 hours.
