🔧 Sonata - Ignition Coil Replacement
On your Sonata, each spark plug has its own ignition coil (coil-on-plug). Replacing a weak or failed coil can fix misfires, rough idle, flashing check engine light, and loss of power.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a cool engine; coils sit on a hot valve cover.
- ⚠️ Keep the key out of the car so the engine can’t be started accidentally.
- ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery terminal if you’re worried about shorting a connector.
- ⚠️ Pull coils straight up; twisting hard can tear the rubber boot.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" socket extension (1/4")
- Torque wrench (inch-pound or low-range ft-lb)
- Trim removal tool
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Ignition coil - Qty: 1 (or Qty: 4 if replacing all)
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1 (small packet)
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Let the engine cool fully.
- If disconnecting the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative terminal and isolate it so it can’t spring back.
- Tip: Replace coils one at a time to avoid mix-ups.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the engine cover
- Grab the cover near the corners and pull upward firmly to pop it off the rubber grommets.
- If a plastic clip or hose guide is in the way, use a trim removal tool to gently release it.
Step 2: Unplug the ignition coil electrical connector
- Locate the coil on top of the engine (one per cylinder).
- Press the connector lock tab and pull the connector straight back by hand.
- Tip: Don’t pull on the wires—pull on the connector body.
Step 3: Remove the coil hold-down bolt
- Use a 10mm socket, 6" extension, and 1/4" ratchet to remove the single bolt holding the coil down.
- Set the bolt aside where it can’t fall into the engine bay.
Step 4: Remove the ignition coil
- Pull the coil straight up while gently wiggling it.
- If it feels stuck, keep the pull straight up—don’t pry hard sideways on the valve cover.
- Tip: A slight twist helps break the boot seal.
Step 5: Prep and install the new coil
- Put a tiny dab of dielectric grease inside the end of the rubber boot (this helps prevent moisture and makes future removal easier).
- Push the new coil straight down onto the spark plug until it fully seats.
Step 6: Reinstall the coil bolt and torque it
- Thread the bolt by hand first (prevents cross-threading), then snug it with the 10mm socket.
- Use a torque wrench: Torque to 9.8 Nm (7 ft-lbs).
- Tip: Small bolts strip easily—use the torque wrench.
Step 7: Plug the connector back in
- Push the connector on until you feel/hear it click.
- Gently tug it to confirm it’s locked.
Step 8: Reinstall the engine cover
- Line up the cover with the mounting points and press down until it snaps into place.
- If you disconnected the battery, reconnect it using a 10mm socket and snug the clamp.
âś… After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30–60 seconds. It should run smooth.
- Test drive for 10 minutes and verify the check engine light stays off.
- If the check engine light was on: a scan tool can clear codes after the fix (some lights will clear after a few drive cycles).
- If it still misfires: the issue may be the spark plug or injector, not the coil.
