🔧 Focus - Ignition Coil Replacement
The ignition coils sit on top of the spark plugs and create the high voltage needed to fire the plugs. Replacing a bad coil can fix misfires, rough idle, poor power, and flashing check engine light.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Let the engine cool before you start; the valve cover area gets very hot.
- ⚠️ Keep the key out of the ignition while unplugging coils.
- ⚠️ If you disconnect the battery, use a 10mm socket and remove the negative terminal first.
- ⚠️ Pull coils straight up; don’t pry hard on plastic connectors.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 8mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- 6" extension (1/4" drive)
- Torque wrench (inch-pound capable)
- Small flat trim tool
- 10mm socket
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Ignition coil - Qty: 1 (or Qty: 4 if replacing all)
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and open the hood.
- If your check engine light was flashing (active misfire), avoid driving until repaired.
- Replace one coil at a time to avoid mix-ups.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the engine cover (if equipped)
- Grip the cover and pull upward to pop it off the rubber grommets.
- If it feels stuck, use a small flat trim tool to gently lift at a corner, then pull up.
Step 2: Locate the ignition coils
- The coils are the 4 identical units on top of the valve cover, each with an electrical connector.
Step 3: Unplug the coil electrical connector
- Press the connector lock tab and pull the connector straight off.
- If the tab is stubborn, use a small flat trim tool to gently help lift the lock while pulling.
Step 4: Remove the coil retaining bolt
- Use an 8mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" extension to remove the bolt holding the coil down.
- Set the bolt somewhere safe (it’s easy to drop).
Step 5: Remove the ignition coil
- Pull the coil straight up while gently twisting by hand.
- If it’s stuck, keep twisting and pulling—avoid prying hard on the valve cover.
Step 6: Install the new ignition coil
- Put a very small smear of dielectric grease inside the coil boot (the rubber end that goes over the spark plug).
- Push the new coil straight down until it fully seats on the spark plug.
Step 7: Reinstall and torque the coil bolt
- Start the bolt by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Use an 8mm socket to snug it down.
- Use a torque wrench (inch-pound capable): Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs).
Step 8: Reconnect the electrical connector
- Push the connector on until it clicks/locks.
- Give it a gentle tug to confirm it’s fully latched.
Step 9: Repeat for other coils (only if replacing more than one)
- Repeat Steps 3–8 for each additional coil you’re replacing.
Step 10: Reinstall the engine cover
- Align the cover with the grommets and press down firmly at each corner until it pops into place.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 1–2 minutes. It should run smooth with no shaking.
- If you had a check engine light, it may take a few drive cycles to turn off, or you can clear codes with a scan tool.
- Test drive gently, then recheck that all connectors are fully seated.
- If it still misfires, the next common items are spark plugs and coil connectors/wiring.
