🔧 Rogue - Ignition Coil Replacement

Ignition coils sit on top of the spark plugs and provide the high voltage needed to fire each cylinder. If one fails, you may get misfires, rough idle, poor acceleration, or a check engine light. This job is straightforward on your Rogue and usually takes under an hour with basic hand tools.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a cool engine only. Hot ignition components can burn you.
  • Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging coils.
  • Keep dirt out of the spark plug wells.
  • Do not pull on the wire harness; press the connector lock first.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • 6-inch extension
  • Trim panel tool
  • Dielectric grease
  • Torque wrench
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Ignition coil - Qty: 4
  • Valve cover gasket set - Qty: 1 if leaking oil into plug wells
  • Spark plugs - Qty: 4 if due for replacement

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool completely.
  • Open the hood and remove the engine cover if equipped.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the engine cover

  • Lift the plastic engine cover straight up by hand. It is held on by rubber grommets.
  • Pull evenly to avoid cracking the cover.

Step 2: Disconnect the battery

  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to loosen the negative battery terminal.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot touch the battery post.

Step 3: Unplug each ignition coil

  • Press the connector lock tab on each coil and pull the electrical connector straight off.
  • If needed, use a trim panel tool gently on the lock tab area.

Step 4: Remove the ignition coils

  • Use your hands to twist each coil slightly, then pull it straight up out of the spark plug well.
  • If a coil is stuck, wiggle it gently. Do not force it sideways.

Step 5: Inspect the plug wells

  • Look for oil, water, or debris inside the spark plug tubes.
  • If oil is present, the valve cover gasket may need replacement before installing new coils.

Step 6: Install the new ignition coils

  • Apply a small amount of dielectric grease inside the coil boot. This is a silicone grease that helps prevent moisture and makes future removal easier.
  • Push each new coil straight down until it seats fully on the spark plug.
  • Reconnect each electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 7: Reinstall the engine cover and battery cable

  • Press the engine cover back onto its grommets.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket and tighten it snugly. Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • Listen for a smooth idle and check for warning lights.
  • If the check engine light was on, clear codes with a scan tool if needed.
  • If misfires continue, the spark plugs may also need replacement.
