🔧 Ignition Coils - Replacement
Your Sierra uses coil-on-plug ignition coils, one per spark plug. Replacing a weak coil can fix rough idle, misfires, hesitation, and check-engine codes without needing a major repair.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Let the engine cool fully before starting. Coils sit on hot cylinder heads.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging ignition coils.
- Do not pull on the coil wire harness. Use the connector release tab.
- Keep dirt out of the spark plug wells. Debris can damage the plugs or cylinder.
- If you have a flashing check-engine light, do not keep driving it hard.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 8mm socket
- 10mm socket
- Ratchet
- 3-inch extension
- Torque wrench
- Flat-blade trim tool
- Needle-nose pliers
- Dielectric grease
- Safety glasses
- Mechanic gloves
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Ignition coil - Qty: 1 per failed cylinder
- Spark plug - Qty: 8 if you choose to replace all while access is open

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Turn the key off and remove it from the vehicle.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting.
- Replacing coils one at a time helps avoid mix-ups.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove engine cover and intake ducting
- Use the 8mm socket or 10mm socket to remove the fasteners holding the engine cover or air intake tube, if equipped.
- Lift the cover straight up and set it aside.
- If the intake tube blocks access, loosen the clamps with the 8mm socket and move it out of the way.
Step 2: Disconnect the coil electrical connector
- Locate the ignition coil on the top of the valve cover.
- Use a flat-blade trim tool or your fingers to release the connector lock.
- Pull the connector straight off the coil.
- Do not tug on the wires.
Step 3: Remove the ignition coil
- Use the 10mm socket and ratchet to remove the coil hold-down bolt.
- Gently twist the coil back and forth, then pull it straight up out of the spark plug well.
- Inspect the boot for oil, cracks, or carbon tracking.
- Torque on install: 10 Nm (89 in-lbs)
Step 4: Prepare the new coil
- Apply a thin film of dielectric grease inside the coil boot.
- Make sure the spark plug well is clean and dry.
- If the plug well has oil in it, the valve cover gasket may also need attention.
Step 5: Install the new ignition coil
- Push the new coil straight down onto the spark plug until it seats fully.
- Install the hold-down bolt by hand first.
- Use the 10mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the bolt to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
Step 6: Reassemble the intake and cover
- Reinstall any intake ducting using the 8mm socket.
- Reinstall the engine cover by pressing it down into place.
- Make sure all hoses and clamps are secure.
Step 7: Reconnect power and test
- Reconnect the negative battery cable.
- Start the engine and let it idle.
- Listen for smooth operation and check for warning lights.
- If the check-engine light stays on, scan for misfire codes and clear them after repair.
✅ After Repair
- Drive the truck gently at first and confirm the misfire is gone.
- Recheck the coil area for loose connectors or abnormal engine noise.
- If you replaced one failed coil, consider replacing spark plugs if they are worn.
