Step 2: Locate the ignition coils
- The coils are the 4 identical modules on top of the valve cover, each with an electrical connector.
Step 3: Unplug the coil electrical connectors
- Press the connector lock tab (use a flathead screwdriver gently if needed), then pull the connector straight off.
- If itās stuck, wiggle the connectorādonāt yank.
Step 4: Remove the ignition coil hold-down bolts

- Keep the bolts together so none fall into the engine bay.
Step 5: Remove the ignition coils
- Grab the coil body and twist slightly, then pull straight up to remove it from the spark plug tube.
- If a coil is stubborn, use gentle rockingādo not pry on the valve cover.
Step 6: Install the new ignition coils
- Apply a very small dab of dielectric grease inside the new coil boot.
- Push the coil straight down until it fully seats on the spark plug.
- Reinstall the hold-down bolt by hand first (prevents cross-threading).
- Use a torque wrench (in-lb or Nm) and 10mm socket: Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
Step 7: Reconnect the electrical connectors
- Push each connector on until it clicks/locks.
- Do a quick tug check to confirm itās secure.
Step 8: Reinstall the engine cover
- Align the cover with the mounting points and press down firmly at each corner until it snaps into the grommets.
Step 9: Reconnect the battery
- Use a 10mm wrench to reinstall and tighten the negative battery terminal.
ā After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 1-2 minutes; it should run smooth.
- If you had a check-engine light, clear codes with a scan tool if available, then recheck after a short drive.
- Test drive 10-15 minutes and confirm no flashing check-engine light or misfire feel.
- If misfire remains, the next common step is spark plug inspection/replacement.
