🔧 Ignition Coils - Replacement

The ignition coils on your Explorer sit on top of the engine and fire each spark plug. Replacing a weak coil can fix misfires, rough idle, hesitation, and check engine light codes like P0300-P0306.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Let the engine cool fully before starting. Coils and the intake area can get hot.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before removing coil connectors.
  • Do not force coil connectors. The locking tabs are easy to break.
  • Keep dirt out of the spark plug wells. Debris can cause misfires.
  • If one coil failed from oil or water intrusion, inspect the valve cover area and spark plug tube seals first.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key or fob from the vehicle.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least 2 minutes before unplugging coils.
  • If your Explorer has a check engine light, note the misfire codes before clearing them.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the engine cover and intake ducting

  • Use a 10mm socket and trim removal tool to remove the engine cover and any intake ducting that blocks access to the coils.
  • Lift the engine cover straight up if it uses rubber grommets.
  • Keep all clips together.

Step 2: Disconnect the battery

  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back onto the post.

Step 3: Unplug the ignition coil connectors

  • Use your fingers or a flat-blade pick to release the connector lock on each coil.
  • Press the release tab and pull the connector straight off.
  • Do not pull on the wire itself.

Step 4: Remove the ignition coils

  • Use an 8mm socket to remove each coil hold-down bolt.
  • Twist the coil gently, then pull it straight up out of the spark plug tube.
  • If a coil sticks, wiggle it lightly while pulling upward.
  • Do not pry against the valve cover.

Step 5: Inspect the spark plug wells

  • Look down each plug tube for oil, coolant, or moisture.
  • If you see contamination, fix the leak before installing new coils.
  • Wipe the area clean with a dry cloth.

Step 6: Install the new ignition coils

  • Apply a small amount of dielectric grease inside each coil boot.
  • Set each coil straight into the spark plug tube.
  • Press down until the coil seats fully.
  • Install the hold-down bolt and tighten with a torque wrench to 7 Nm (62 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Reconnect the coil connectors

  • Push each electrical connector on until it clicks.
  • Verify the lock tab is fully engaged on every coil.

Step 8: Reinstall removed parts

  • Reinstall the intake ducting and engine cover using the 10mm socket and trim removal tool.
  • Reattach the negative battery cable with the 10mm socket.
  • Check for leftover fasteners.

  • Start the engine and listen for smooth idle.
  • Check that the check engine light is off.
  • If you had misfire codes, clear them with a scan tool and verify they do not return.
  • Take a short test drive and make sure acceleration feels normal.
