🔧 1500 - Ignition Coil Replacement
Your ignition coils sit on top of each spark plug and turn battery voltage into the spark needed to fire the engine. If a coil fails, you may get a rough idle, flashing check-engine light, misfire codes, or poor power.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Let the engine cool fully before starting. Coils and valve covers can be hot.
- Turn the key off and remove the key fob from the truck.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable before touching the ignition coils.
- Do not pull on the coil wire or connector by the wires. Use the connector tab.
- If you find oil in the coil wells, stop and inspect the valve cover seals before installing new coils.
- Keep dirt out of the spark plug holes. Debris can cause misfires.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 8mm socket
- 1/4-inch ratchet
- 1/4-inch extension
- Flat-blade trim tool
- Dielectric grease
- Torque wrench
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Battery terminal wrench
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Ignition coil - Qty: 1 per failed coil
- Ignition coil set - Qty: 8 if replacing all coils
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Let the engine cool down completely.
- Open the hood and remove the key fob from the vehicle area.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting.
- If replacing more than one coil, do them one at a time so the connectors do not get mixed up.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect battery power
- Use a battery terminal wrench to loosen the negative battery cable.
- Move the cable aside so it cannot touch the battery post.
- Keep the cable isolated.
Step 2: Remove the engine cover
- Use a flat-blade trim tool or your hands to lift the engine cover straight up.
- Set it aside carefully.
Step 3: Access the coil you are replacing
- Find the coil on top of the valve cover above the spark plug.
- If an intake tube blocks access on your side, loosen the clamp with an 8mm socket and move the tube enough to reach the coil.
Step 4: Disconnect the coil connector
- Press the locking tab on the electrical connector.
- Pull the connector straight off the coil.
- Do not tug on the wires.
Step 5: Remove the coil retaining bolt
- Use an 8mm socket, 1/4-inch ratchet, and 1/4-inch extension to remove the coil bolt.
- Lift the coil straight up and out of the spark plug well.
- Tighten later to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
Step 6: Inspect the coil well and spark plug area
- Look for oil, water, or dirt in the plug tube.
- If debris is present, clean it out carefully before installing the new coil.
- Clean wells prevent repeat misfires.
Step 7: Install the new coil
- Apply a small amount of dielectric grease inside the coil boot.
- Slide the new coil straight down onto the spark plug.
- Install the retaining bolt by hand first, then snug it with the 8mm socket.
- Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
Step 8: Reconnect the electrical connector
- Push the connector onto the coil until the latch clicks.
- Give it a light pull to make sure it is locked.
Step 9: Reinstall anything removed for access
- If you moved the intake tube, reinstall it and tighten the clamp with the 8mm socket.
- Reinstall the engine cover by pressing it down into place.
Step 10: Reconnect the battery
- Reconnect the negative battery cable with the battery terminal wrench.
- Tighten it securely.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle.
- Listen for smooth operation and watch for a check-engine light.
- If the truck still misfires, scan for codes and confirm the spark plug in that cylinder is not worn or fouled.
- If you replaced one coil because of a misfire, clear the codes and road test the truck.
