🔧 Ignition Coils - Replacement

The ignition coils on your F-150 mount on top of each spark plug and send high voltage to fire the plugs. Replacing weak coils can fix misfires, rough idle, hesitation, and check-engine lights. This job is straightforward, but keep the work area clean so dirt does not fall into the spark plug tubes.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a cold engine only. Coils and valve covers can get hot.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting to reduce the chance of electrical damage.
  • Do not pull on the wiring; release each connector lock first.
  • Keep dirt and water out of the spark plug wells.
  • If a coil has caused repeated misfires, inspect the spark plugs too.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 8mm socket
  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • 6-inch extension
  • Trim tool
  • Dielectric grease
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Torque wrench

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Ignition coil set - Qty: 8

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on a level surface and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool completely.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before touching any coil connectors.
  • Tip: Replace coils one bank at a time.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect battery power

  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery cable clamp.
  • Remove the cable from the battery and secure it so it cannot spring back.

Step 2: Remove engine cover

  • If equipped, lift off the plastic engine cover by hand or remove any retaining fasteners with an 8mm socket.
  • Set the cover aside in a safe spot.

Step 3: Unplug the first ignition coil

  • Locate the coil on top of the valve cover near each spark plug.
  • Use a trim tool to gently release the connector lock if needed.
  • Press the tab and unplug the electrical connector by hand.

Step 4: Remove the coil hold-down bolt

  • Use an 8mm socket and ratchet to remove the coil bolt.
  • Keep the bolt organized so it goes back in the same spot.

Step 5: Remove the old ignition coil

  • Pull the coil straight up and out of the spark plug tube.
  • If it sticks, twist it slightly while pulling upward.
  • Tip: Do not pry on the valve cover.

Step 6: Install the new ignition coil

  • Lightly apply dielectric grease inside the coil boot.
  • Push the new coil straight down until it fully seats on the spark plug.
  • Reinstall the hold-down bolt with the 8mm socket.
  • Torque to 8 Nm (71 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Reconnect the electrical connector

  • Push the connector on until it clicks.
  • Make sure the lock is fully seated.

Step 8: Repeat for the remaining coils

  • Move cylinder by cylinder and repeat the same removal and installation steps.
  • Keep each connector and bolt with its matching coil area.

Step 9: Reinstall the engine cover and battery cable

  • Reinstall the engine cover by hand or with the 8mm socket if fasteners were removed.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with the 10mm socket.
  • Tighten the clamp snugly.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • Listen for smooth running and check for warning lights.
  • If the check-engine light was on, clear codes with a scan tool and confirm no misfire returns.
  • If one coil failed, inspect the related spark plug for wear or oil contamination.
