🔧 Ignition Coil Replacement

Your Silverado uses one ignition coil per cylinder, mounted on top of each spark plug. Replacing a weak or failed coil can fix misfires, rough idle, flashing check engine lights, and poor fuel economy.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1.5-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work with the engine completely cool before touching coils or plugs.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging ignition coils.
  • Do not pull on the coil wire harness; use the connector lock tab first.
  • Keep dirt out of the spark plug wells while the coils are removed.
  • One coil per cylinder.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • 6-inch extension
  • Trim panel tool
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Torque wrench
  • Dielectric grease
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Ignition coil - Qty: 8

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key or fob from the vehicle.
  • Let the engine cool fully.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Label the coils if you plan to inspect them later.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the hood and access the coil covers

  • Open the hood and locate the ignition coil covers on top of each valve cover.
  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to remove any engine cover fasteners if equipped.
  • Lift the cover straight up and set it aside.

Step 2: Disconnect the coil electrical connector

  • Find the connector on the coil you are replacing.
  • Use your fingers or needle-nose pliers to release the connector lock tab if needed.
  • Pull the connector straight off the coil.

Step 3: Remove the ignition coil

  • Use a 10mm socket, ratchet, and 6-inch extension to remove the coil retaining bolt.
  • Twist the coil gently left and right, then pull it straight up out of the spark plug well.
  • If it sticks, keep twisting lightly. Do not pry hard.

Step 4: Inspect the spark plug well

  • Look for oil, water, or dirt in the plug tube.
  • Wipe out light dirt with a clean rag.
  • Oil in the well usually means another repair is needed.

Step 5: Install the new ignition coil

  • Apply a small amount of dielectric grease inside the coil boot.
  • Align the new coil over the spark plug and push it straight down until fully seated.
  • Install the retaining bolt with a 10mm socket and tighten it to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).

Step 6: Reconnect the electrical connector

  • Push the connector onto the coil until it clicks.
  • Make sure the lock tab is fully engaged.

Step 7: Repeat for the remaining coils

  • Repeat the same process for each coil that needs replacement.
  • If replacing all coils, work one cylinder at a time to avoid mix-ups.

Step 8: Reinstall covers and reconnect battery

  • Reinstall any engine covers using a 10mm socket.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable and tighten it with a 10mm socket.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and listen for smooth idle.
  • Check that the check engine light is off.
  • If you had a misfire code, clear it with a scan tool if needed.
  • Test drive the truck and make sure it accelerates smoothly.
  • If a misfire stays on one cylinder after replacement, inspect the spark plug and wiring next.
