🔧 Ignition Coils - Replacement

Your Sentra uses four individual ignition coils mounted on top of the engine. Replacing them is straightforward: unplug each coil, remove the retaining bolts, swap the coils, then reinstall everything carefully so the connectors and boots seat fully.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a cool engine only. The valve cover and coils can get hot.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key/fob before starting.
  • Do not pull on the spark plug wires; this engine uses coil-on-plug units with electrical connectors.
  • Keep dirt out of the spark plug wells. Debris can fall into the cylinders if the coils are removed.
  • Battery disconnect is not required, but disconnecting the negative terminal is a good extra safety step if you want to avoid accidental shorts.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Small extension
  • Flat trim tool or small pick
  • Torque wrench
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Ignition coil - Qty: 4

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool completely.
  • Open the hood and remove any engine cover if equipped.
  • If you are replacing only one coil, it is still smart to inspect the other three for cracks, oil, or loose boots.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the engine cover

  • If equipped, lift the engine cover straight up by hand. Some covers are held by rubber grommets.
  • If it feels stuck, wiggle it gently rather than prying hard.

Step 2: Unplug the ignition coil connector

  • Use a flat trim tool or small pick to release the lock tab on each coil connector.
  • Press the connector tab and pull the plug straight back.
  • Do not yank the wires.

Step 3: Remove the coil hold-down bolt

  • Use a 10mm socket, ratchet, and small extension to remove the bolt from the coil.
  • Repeat for each coil you are replacing.
  • Torque to 8 N·m (71 in-lbs) on installation.

Step 4: Remove the ignition coil

  • Twist the coil gently left and right, then pull it straight up out of the spark plug well.
  • If it resists, keep twisting lightly until the rubber boot releases.
  • Pull straight up to avoid boot damage.

Step 5: Install the new ignition coil

  • Compare the old and new coil to make sure they match.
  • Slide the new coil straight down into the spark plug well until it seats fully.
  • Install the hold-down bolt by hand first, then tighten with the 10mm socket.
  • Torque to 8 N·m (71 in-lbs).

Step 6: Reconnect the electrical connector

  • Push each connector on until it clicks.
  • Make sure the lock tab is fully engaged.

Step 7: Repeat for the remaining coils

  • Work one cylinder at a time so parts do not get mixed up.
  • If replacing all four, complete the same process for each coil.

Step 8: Reinstall the engine cover

  • Line up the cover with its mounting points and press it down evenly.
  • Make sure it sits flat and does not pinch any wiring.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • Listen for a smooth idle and check that the check engine light is off.
  • If the engine still runs rough, scan for misfire codes before driving.
  • Take a short test drive and confirm normal acceleration.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $280-$520 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $120-$260 (parts only)

You Save: $160-$260 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1 hour.
