🔧 Ignition Coils - Replacement
Your Silverado uses eight individual ignition coils, one for each cylinder. Replacing a weak coil can fix misfires, rough idle, hard starts, and check engine lights. On this engine, the coils sit on the valve covers and connect to the spark plugs with short plug wires.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Turn the ignition off and remove the key before starting.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm wrench or socket before touching coil wiring.
- Wait a few minutes after shutdown so hot engine parts can cool.
- Do not pull on the coil wires by the wire itself; pull on the boot.
- Keep dirt out of the spark plug wells and coil boots.
- If the truck has stored misfire codes, clear them after repair and verify the fix with a scan tool.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4-inch drive ratchet
- 6-inch extension
- Torque wrench
- Spark plug wire pliers
- Flat-blade trim tool
- Dielectric grease applicator
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Ignition coil - Qty: 8
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1 tube
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Let the engine cool completely.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable before removing coils.
- If only one coil failed, replacing all eight is still a good idea on high-mileage trucks.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the battery
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the negative battery cable.
- Move the cable aside so it cannot touch the battery terminal.
Step 2: Remove access parts
- If the engine cover is installed, lift it off by hand.
- If any intake ducting blocks access, loosen the clamps with a flat-blade trim tool or the correct clamp driver and move it aside.
Step 3: Label and remove the plug wires
- Use spark plug wire pliers to grip each boot, not the wire.
- Pull the wire boots off the coil and spark plug one at a time.
- Label each wire if needed so it returns to the same cylinder.
- Keep wires in order.
Step 4: Remove the old coil
- Use a 10mm socket, 1/4-inch drive ratchet, and 6-inch extension to remove the coil mounting bolt.
- Lift the coil straight up and out of the bracket.
Step 5: Install the new coil
- Place the new coil into position.
- Use a small amount of dielectric grease inside the boot where it meets the spark plug.
- Install the mounting bolt by hand first, then tighten with a torque wrench.
- Torque to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).
Step 6: Reconnect the plug wires
- Push each plug wire boot onto the coil until it seats fully.
- Make sure each boot clicks or feels fully seated on the plug and coil.
- Repeat Steps 3 through 6 for each coil you are replacing.
Step 7: Reinstall removed parts and reconnect battery
- Reinstall any intake parts or engine cover removed earlier.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and listen for a smooth idle.
- Check that the check engine light is off.
- If a scan tool is available, clear any misfire codes and verify there are no pending codes.
- Take a short test drive and confirm the engine accelerates smoothly.
- If it still misfires, inspect the spark plugs and plug wires next.
