š§ Camry - Ignition Coil Replacement
Your Camry uses one ignition coil per cylinder (coil-on-plug). Replacing a weak coil can fix misfires, rough idle, and a flashing check-engine light, and itās a very DIY-friendly job.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
ā ļø Safety & Precautions
- ā ļø Let the engine cool before working near the valve cover and exhaust.
- ā ļø Disconnect the negative battery terminal if youāll be unplugging multiple connectors or working slowly around wiring.
- ā ļø If the check-engine light is flashing, avoid drivingāthis can damage the catalytic converter.

š© Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Ignition coil - Qty: 1-4
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
š Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and open the hood.
- If you choose to disconnect power: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative battery cable and move it aside so it canāt spring back.
- Replace coils one at a time to avoid mix-ups.
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the ignition coils
- Remove any plastic engine cover if equipped (some are held by small fasteners).
- Look on top of the engine valve cover for 4 identical coils in a row, each with an electrical connector.
Step 2: Unplug the coil connector
- Press the connector lock tab and pull the connector straight off by hand.
- If itās stuck, gently help the tab with a flathead screwdriverādonāt pry hard on the wires.
Step 3: Remove the coil hold-down bolt
- Use a 10mm socket, 3" socket extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the single bolt holding the coil to the valve cover.
- Set the bolt somewhere safe so it canāt fall into the engine bay.
Step 4: Pull the ignition coil out
- Grip the coil and twist it slightly left/right, then pull straight up to remove it.
- If the rubber boot feels āstuckā to the spark plug, keep twisting while pullingāthis is normal.
Step 5: Prep and install the new coil
- Put a very small dab of dielectric grease inside the new coil boot (this helps prevent moisture and makes future removal easier).
- Push the new coil straight down onto the spark plug until it fully seats.
- Reinstall the hold-down bolt by hand first (to avoid cross-threading), then tighten with a 10mm socket.
- Tighten the coil bolt: Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).
Step 6: Reconnect the electrical connector
- Push the connector on until it clicks.
- Give it a light tug to confirm itās locked.
Step 7: Repeat for other cylinders (if replacing more than one)
- Do the same steps for each remaining coil youāre replacing.
- If only one coil failed, the others may be close behind.
Step 8: Reconnect battery (if disconnected) and reassemble
- Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
- Reinstall any engine cover you removed.
ā After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 1-2 minutes. It should run smoothly with no shaking.
- If the check-engine light was on, it may take a few drive cycles to turn off, or you can clear codes with a scan tool.
- Test drive for 10-15 minutes and recheck for any warning lights or rough running.
