🔧 Ignition Coils - Replacement
On your Tacoma, the ignition coils sit on top of each spark plug. Replacement means removing the engine cover, unplugging each coil, and swapping them one at a time to avoid mix-ups.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Let the engine cool completely before starting. Hot intake parts and coil boots can burn you.
- Keep metal tools away from battery terminals and exposed electrical connectors.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable if you want the safest possible job. This is recommended.
- Work one coil at a time so the connectors and coils do not get mixed up.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- Ratchet
- 6-inch extension
- Trim panel tool
- Torque wrench
- Needle-nose pliers
- Safety glasses
- Mechanic gloves
- Dielectric grease

- Ignition coil - Qty: 6
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Shut the engine off and remove the key.
- Let the intake and engine cool down.
- If you are replacing all coils, label each cylinder position as you go.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the battery
- Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back to the terminal.
Step 2: Remove the engine cover
- Pull up carefully on the engine cover to release it from the mounting grommets.
- If it feels stuck, use a trim panel tool to lift evenly.
Step 3: Access the ignition coils
- Locate the six coil packs on top of the valve covers.
- Work on one side at a time so nothing gets crossed up.
- Take a quick photo first.
Step 4: Disconnect each coil connector
- Press the connector lock tab and pull the electrical connector straight off.
- If a tab is tight, use a small flat trim panel tool to help release it gently.
Step 5: Remove the ignition coil bolts
- Use a 10mm socket, ratchet, and 6-inch extension to remove the coil hold-down bolts.
- Set each bolt aside in order so it goes back into the same spot.
Step 6: Remove the coils
- Twist each coil gently and pull it straight up out of the spark plug tube.
- If a coil sticks, wiggle it slowly instead of prying hard.
- Inspect the rubber boot for oil, cracks, or carbon tracking.
Step 7: Prepare the new coils
- Apply a small amount of dielectric grease inside each coil boot.
- Do not overpack the boot with grease.
Step 8: Install the new coils
- Push each new coil straight down onto its spark plug until fully seated.
- Install the hold-down bolts by hand first, then tighten with a torque wrench.
- Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
Step 9: Reconnect the coil connectors
- Push each electrical connector on until it clicks into place.
- Give each one a gentle tug to confirm it is locked.
Step 10: Reinstall the engine cover and battery
- Press the engine cover back onto its mounting points.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket and tighten securely.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and listen for smooth idle.
- Check the dash for a check engine light.
- If the engine still misfires, the spark plugs may also need replacement.
- Take a short road test and confirm normal acceleration.
