🔧 Frontier - Ignition Coil Replacement
On your Frontier, each cylinder has its own ignition coil (coil-on-plug). Replacing a failed coil restores smooth running, fixes misfires, and can prevent catalyst damage from unburned fuel.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-3.0 hours
Assumption: Stock VQ40DE 4.0L coil-on-plug setup.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Let the engine cool fully before starting (hot intake parts burn).
- ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental shorts and to protect electronics.
- ⚠️ Do not pull on wiring—release connector locks first to avoid broken terminals.
- ⚠️ Keep dirt out of the spark plug wells; debris can fall into the cylinder if the plug is removed later.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- 3" extension (1/4" drive)
- 6" extension (1/4" drive)
- Torque wrench (inch-pound or low-range Nm)
- Flathead screwdriver (small)
- Needle-nose pliers
- Trim clip tool
- Shop vacuum
- Compressed air blow gun
- Masking tape
- Paint marker
- Magnetic pickup tool
- Flashlight
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Ignition coil - Qty: 1 (or Qty: 6 if replacing all)
- Upper intake manifold gasket set - Qty: 1 (required if removing upper intake)
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to neutral, and set the parking brake.
- Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable and isolate it so it can’t spring back.
- If you’re doing a rear-bank coil (back of engine), plan to remove the upper intake. Label every hose/connector with masking tape before unplugging.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the engine cover (if equipped)
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the cover fasteners, then lift the cover off.
Step 2: Identify which coil(s) you’re replacing
- Use a flashlight to locate the coil on top of the valve cover. Each coil has one electrical connector and one 10mm hold-down bolt.
- Replacing all 6 prevents repeat failures.
Step 3: Clean around the coil and spark plug well
- Use compressed air blow gun and/or a shop vacuum to remove dirt around the coil base and the spark plug well.
- This helps keep debris from falling into the plug well.
Step 4: Unplug the coil electrical connector
- Use a flathead screwdriver (small) to gently lift the connector lock tab (if tight), then pull the connector straight off.
- Wiggle the connector—don’t yank wires.
Step 5: Remove the coil hold-down bolt
- Use a 10mm socket, 3" extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the coil bolt.
- Use a magnetic pickup tool if you drop the bolt.
Step 6: Remove the coil
- Twist the coil gently to break the boot loose, then pull the coil straight up by hand.
- If it’s stuck, keep twisting—avoid prying on the valve cover.
Step 7: Prep and install the new coil
- Apply a small dab of dielectric grease inside the new coil boot (this helps sealing and future removal).
- Push the coil straight down until it fully seats on the spark plug.
Step 8: Reinstall the coil bolt and torque it
- Start the bolt by hand to avoid cross-threading, then snug it with a 10mm socket.
- Use a torque wrench: Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lb).
Step 9: Reconnect the coil connector
- Push the connector on until it clicks. Lightly tug it to confirm it’s locked.
Step 10 (Only if replacing a rear-bank coil): Remove the upper intake to access rear coils
- Use masking tape and a paint marker to label all vacuum hoses and electrical connectors before removal.
- Use needle-nose pliers to release hose clamps, then remove hoses carefully.
- Use a trim clip tool to remove any push-clips holding wiring looms to the intake area.
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet with a 6" extension to remove the upper intake fasteners, then lift the upper intake off.
- Replace the intake gaskets (do not reuse flattened gaskets).
- Reinstall the upper intake and use a torque wrench: Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lb).
- Reconnect all hoses/connectors using your labels as a guide.
- Take a photo before unplugging anything.
Step 11: Reinstall the engine cover
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet to reinstall the cover fasteners snugly.
Step 12: Reconnect the battery
- Use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery cable securely.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 2–3 minutes. The idle may be slightly rough for a short time after battery disconnect.
- Test drive for 10–15 minutes and verify no misfire, no flashing check-engine light, and normal power.
- If the check-engine light remains on, the code may need to be cleared with a scan tool (many parts stores can do this).
- Recheck for any hissing sounds (vacuum leak) if the upper intake was removed.
💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
Shop Cost: $250-$650 (parts + labor)
DIY Cost: $60-$450 (parts only, depending on 1 coil vs all 6)
You Save: $190-$200+ by doing it yourself!
Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 1-3 hours.
