🔧 Impala - Headlight Bulb Replacement

On your Impala, the headlight bulbs are accessed from the engine bay behind each headlamp housing. The key is removing the electrical connector, twisting the bulb socket out, and installing the new bulb without touching the glass.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the headlight switch OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let bulbs cool first; they get extremely hot.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life. Use clean gloves.
  • ⚠️ If you must lift the car battery cover area or move intake parts, keep tools away from the battery terminals.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Small flat-blade screwdriver
  • 10mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3" extension (3/8" drive)
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulbs (9006) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • High beam headlight bulbs (9005) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and open the hood.
  • Turn the headlight switch OFF and verify the lights are off.
  • Lay the new bulbs where they won’t get dirty; keep them in the package until install.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Identify which bulb you’re replacing

  • Use a flashlight to look behind the headlamp assembly (from the engine bay).
  • On your Impala there are typically two bulbs per side: low beam (9006) and high beam (9005).
  • Replace bulbs in pairs for matching color.

Step 2: Remove the electrical connector

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Reach behind the headlamp and locate the connector on the back of the bulb.
  • Press the connector lock tab (use a small flat-blade screwdriver only if needed) and pull the connector straight off.
  • Wiggle gently—don’t yank the wires.

Step 3: Remove the bulb from the housing

  • Grip the bulb base and rotate it counterclockwise about a quarter-turn to unlock.
  • Pull the bulb straight out.

Step 4: Install the new bulb

  • Open the new bulb package and handle the bulb by the plastic base (use nitrile gloves).
  • Align the bulb tabs with the housing slots and insert the bulb fully.
  • Rotate clockwise about a quarter-turn until it locks.
  • If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it clean with a lint-free cloth (use the nitrile gloves to avoid re-contaminating).

Step 5: Reconnect the electrical connector

  • Push the connector onto the bulb until it clicks/locks.
  • Gently tug to confirm it’s secure.

Step 6: Repeat on the other headlight

  • Repeat Steps 2–5 for the bulb on the opposite side.
  • If passenger-side access is tight, you may need to loosen/remove an air intake duct fastener using a 10mm socket, 3/8" ratchet, and 3" extension, then reinstall it afterward.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the car and switch on low beams, then high beams to confirm operation on both sides.
  • Walk in front of the car and verify both headlights match in brightness and color.
  • If a bulb doesn’t light, turn lights OFF and re-check the connector is fully seated.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $120-$250 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $30-$90 (parts only, depends on bulb type)

You Save: $90-$160 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
