How to Replace High Beam Headlight Bulbs on a 2015-2017 Lexus NX200t (LED Low Beam Info)
Step-by-step access tips, tools/parts list, and torque specs—plus how to identify non-serviceable LED low beams for 2015, 2016, 2017
Assumption: Your NX200t has LED low beams (not bulb-replaceable) and halogen high beams (bulb-replaceable). I’ll show both paths so you can complete the job without guessing.
🔧 NX - Headlight Bulb Replacement
On your NX, “headlight bulbs” can mean the high beams (replaceable bulbs) or the low beams (often LED modules that are not serviced as a bulb). Access is from under the hood behind each headlamp, and space is tight on one side.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the light switch OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the headlight area cool; bulbs and housings get hot.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves; skin oil can shorten halogen bulb life.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of a halogen bulb.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" socket extension
- Trim clip removal tool
- Phillips screwdriver
- Flashlight
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Fender cover
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- High beam headlight bulbs - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease (small packet) - Qty: 1
- Isopropyl alcohol wipes - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and place a fender cover to protect paint.
- Lay out the new bulbs and keep them in the package until install.
- A trim clip tool removes plastic clips safely.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Identify what’s replaceable on your NX
- Use a flashlight to look at the back of each headlamp.
- If the low beam says LED and there is no removable bulb socket, the low beam is part of the headlamp assembly (not a bulb swap).
- If you see a round twist-lock bulb socket with a wiring plug, that position is bulb-replaceable (commonly the high beam).
Step 2: Create access room (passenger side)
- Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension to loosen/remove the intake duct fasteners if they block access.
- Remove any plastic push-clips using a trim clip removal tool.
- Set the duct/trim aside carefully. Torque to 7.5 Nm (66 in-lbs) on reassembly.
Step 3: Create access room (driver side)
- If the windshield washer fill neck blocks access, use a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet to remove its retaining bolt.
- Gently pull the washer neck up/out of its grommet enough to reach the bulb area (do not yank the hose).
- Reinstall later and Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
Step 4: Remove the old bulb (each side)
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Reach behind the headlamp and unplug the connector by pressing the lock tab (use a flashlight to see the tab).
- Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise about 1/8–1/4 turn, then pull it straight out.
- Twist gently—plastic tabs can crack.
Step 5: Install the new bulb (each side)
- Keep the new bulb glass clean. If you touch it, clean with isopropyl alcohol wipes and let it dry.
- Insert the bulb into the housing, aligning the tabs, then twist clockwise until it locks.
- Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the connector seal (not on the bulb glass), then reconnect the plug until it clicks.
Step 6: Reinstall removed ducts/covers
- Reinstall intake duct pieces using a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension. Torque to 7.5 Nm (66 in-lbs).
- Reinstall any push-clips using a trim clip removal tool.
- If removed, reinstall the washer neck bolt using a 10mm socket. Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
Step 7: If your low beams are LED (common on NX)
- If the “bulb” you’re trying to replace is actually the LED low beam, there is no service bulb to twist out.
- In that case, diagnosis is next (fuse/driver/module) and the repair may require headlamp assembly or LED driver service (depending on configuration).
✅ After Repair
- Turn the headlights ON and confirm both sides work on the correct setting (high beam vs low beam).
- Check that the bulb sits fully locked; a loose bulb can aim wrong and flicker.
- At night, verify beam aim looks even left-to-right on a wall.
- Keep the old working bulb as an emergency spare if only one was failed.
