🔧 Altima - Headlight Bulb Replacement
On your Altima, the headlight bulbs can be changed without removing the headlamp assembly. The exact access point depends on whether you’re replacing the low beams or the high beams, so I’ll walk you through both methods and you can follow the one that matches your bulb.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and let bulbs cool 10 minutes (they get very hot).
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass of a halogen bulb with bare fingers (skin oil shortens bulb life).
- ⚠️ Support the hood securely and keep hands clear of the radiator fans.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job, but keep the headlight switch OFF.

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Turn the headlight switch to OFF and remove the key.
- Open the hood and set your flashlight where it can shine into the engine bay.
- Wear gloves to keep bulb glass clean.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Identify which bulb you’re replacing
- Low beam is usually the main nighttime headlight. High beam is the brighter “brights.”
- If you’re not sure, switch the lights on briefly (then OFF) and watch which lamp is out.
Step 2: Replace the HIGH beam bulb (9005) (engine-bay access)
- Stand at the headlight from the engine bay and locate the high-beam bulb socket on the back of the headlamp.
- Press the lock tab and unplug the connector by hand (use nitrile gloves).
- Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock, then pull the bulb straight out.
- Install the new high beam headlight bulb (9005) without touching the glass (use nitrile gloves).
- Insert the bulb, then twist clockwise to lock.
- Plug the connector back in until it clicks.
- Repeat on the other side so the color/brightness matches.
Step 3: Replace the LOW beam bulb (H11) (fender-liner access)
- Turn the steering wheel all the way away from the side you’re working on (this makes room at the fender liner).
- In the wheel well, locate the small access area in the front of the fender liner behind the bumper/headlight.
- Use a trim clip removal tool (a small pry tool for plastic fasteners) and/or a Phillips screwdriver to remove the liner clips/screws you need for access.
- Gently pull the liner back just enough to reach the back of the headlamp (don’t crease it hard).
- Unplug the low-beam connector by pressing the lock tab (use nitrile gloves).
- Twist the bulb counterclockwise by hand to unlock, then pull it out.
- Install the new low beam headlight bulb (H11) (no touching the glass).
- Twist clockwise to lock, then reconnect the electrical plug until it clicks.
- Reposition the liner and reinstall the clips/screws using the trim clip removal tool and Phillips screwdriver.
- Repeat on the other side (replace in pairs).
Step 4: If something blocks your hand (optional clearance)
- If you can’t comfortably reach, you may need to move a small duct/cover near the headlamp.
- Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" ratchet and 6" extension to remove the fastener(s), move the piece aside, then reinstall after the bulb is changed.
- Don’t force the bulb—reposition for a straight pull.
âś… After Repair
- Turn the headlights ON and confirm both sides work on low beam and high beam.
- Check that the bulbs sit fully locked (a loose bulb can flicker or aim wrong).
- At night, verify the beams look even left-to-right on a wall.
