🔧 Highlander - Headlight Bulb Replacement

On your Highlander XLE, the “headlights” are typically LED low/high beams, which usually do not have a replaceable bulb—you replace the entire headlamp assembly if an LED fails. Some other front bulbs (like turn signal/parking) are replaceable.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 0.5-2.5 hours (depends on which light)

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and let the housing cool before touching anything.
  • ⚠️ If you’re working near wiring connectors, disconnect the negative battery terminal with a 10mm wrench.
  • ⚠️ If your lamp uses a halogen bulb, don’t touch the glass—skin oil can shorten bulb life.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 3/8" ratchet
  • 3" extension
  • 10mm wrench
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Phillips screwdriver #2
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Headlamp assembly (LED type, if low/high beam LED has failed) - Qty: 1 or 2
  • Front turn signal bulb (if turn signal is the issue) - Qty: 2
  • Front parking/marker bulb (if marker light is the issue) - Qty: 2
  • Replacement push clips (bumper liner/splash shield) - Qty: 4-10

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and support it securely.
  • If you’ll unplug headlamp connectors, disconnect the battery negative cable using a 10mm wrench.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which “headlight” is out

  • Turn the lights on and identify the failed function: low beam, high beam, turn signal, or parking/marker.
  • Use a flashlight to look at the headlamp—LED low beams are usually a bright white projector-style light.

Step 2: Access the rear of the headlamp (basic access)

  • Open the hood and locate the rear covers/connectors behind each headlamp.
  • If a cover or liner blocks access, remove fasteners using a trim clip removal tool and 10mm socket.
  • Tip: Keep clips in a cup.

Step 3: If it’s an LED low/high beam failure (common on XLE)

  • There is typically no replaceable “bulb” for the LED low/high beam—replacement is the headlamp assembly.
  • To replace the assembly, you usually must loosen/remove bumper cover fasteners and then remove headlamp mounting bolts using a 10mm socket, ratchet, and extension.
  • Disconnect the headlamp electrical connector(s) by hand (press tab and pull straight).
  • Tip: Don’t pry on the lens.

Step 4: If it’s a replaceable bulb (turn signal / marker)

  • Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise by hand to remove it from the housing.
  • Pull the bulb straight out (or twist, depending on socket style).
  • Install the new bulb fully, then reinstall the socket and twist clockwise to lock.
  • If you removed liners/clips, reinstall them using the trim clip removal tool and 10mm socket.

Step 5: Reconnect battery and verify operation

  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench.
  • Test low beams, high beams, turn signals, and hazards.

âś… After Repair

  • Verify both sides match brightness and color.
  • If a headlamp assembly was replaced, check the beam aim on a flat wall at night; aim issues can reduce visibility.
  • Make sure all clips/liners are secured so nothing rubs the tire.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $150-$500 (bulbs) or $900-$2,200 (LED headlamp assembly replacement)

DIY Cost: $20-$80 (bulbs) or $350-$1,200 (headlamp assemblies)

You Save: $130-$1,000+ by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-2.5 hours.

  • Which light is out—low beam, high beam, turn signal, or parking/marker?
  • Are your headlights LED (bright white projector) or halogen (yellowish reflector)?
