How to Replace Headlight Bulbs on a 2020 Nissan Rogue (Low and High Beam)
Step-by-step DIY headlight bulb change with tools, parts, safety tips, and testing instructions

🔧 Rogue - Headlight Bulb Replacement
You’ll be replacing the headlight bulbs from behind the headlight housings, inside the engine bay. On your Rogue, the low and high beam bulbs are separate, so you can change just one or both.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5–1 hour
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Always switch the headlight switch to OFF and remove the key or switch ignition to OFF before working.
- ⚠️ Engine, exhaust, and some parts can be hot; let the engine bay cool for at least 15–20 minutes if you were just driving.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of the new bulbs with bare fingers; skin oil can make them burn out early.
- ⚠️ Work in a well-lit area and set the parking brake so the Rogue cannot roll.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required, but if you feel safer, you can loosen the negative cable using a 10mm wrench and move it aside.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 🧰 10mm socket
- 🧰 10mm wrench
- 🧰 1/4" drive ratchet
- 🧰 Short extension (1/4" drive)
- 🧰 Flat trim removal tool (plastic)
- 🧰 Needle-nose pliers
- 🧰 Disposable nitrile or latex gloves
- 🧰 Safety glasses
- 🧰 Fender cover or clean towel
- 🧰 Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- 🔩 Low beam headlight bulbs (H11 halogen) - Qty: 2 Replace in pairs
- 🔩 High beam headlight bulbs (9005 halogen) - Qty: 2 Optional, replace in pairs
- 🔩 Dielectric grease for electrical connectors - Qty: 1 small tube
📋 Before You Begin
- Park the Rogue on level ground, set the parking brake, and switch ignition and headlights to OFF.
- Turn the steering wheel to the side you’re working on if you decide to access bulbs through the wheel well (more space on that side).
- Open the hood and support it with the hood prop rod.
- If you want maximum safety, disconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench and tuck the cable away so it cannot spring back.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Identify low and high beam bulb locations
- Open the hood and look at the back of the headlight on the driver side.
- The low beam (H11) is usually the larger bulb more toward the outside of the vehicle, with a round plastic cap or socket.
- The high beam (9005) is usually the inner bulb, closer to the grille.
- Use a flashlight to see the labels on the back of the housing; sometimes “H11” or “HB3/9005” is molded into the plastic near the connector.
Step 2: Make space on the driver side (if needed)
- On the driver side, space is tighter near the battery and fuse box.
- If access is tight, gently move aside any flexible intake snorkels (plastic air duct) by loosening their clips with a flat trim removal tool or fingers. Do not disconnect any wiring.
- Only move what flexes easily; don’t force hard plastic.
Step 3: Remove the low beam bulb (H11) – driver side
- Locate the low beam bulb connector on the back of the headlight (outer side of the housing).
- Put on gloves and safety glasses.
- Hold the plastic connector and twist the bulb base counterclockwise about a quarter turn to unlock it. No tool is needed here; just hand force.
- Gently pull the bulb assembly straight out from the housing.
- Press the small locking tab on the electrical connector with your thumb and pull the connector off the bulb. Use needle-nose pliers gently if the tab is stiff.
Step 4: Install the new low beam bulb (H11) – driver side
- Without touching the glass, take the new H11 bulb out of its package. Hold it by the plastic base.
- If you accidentally touch the glass, clean it with rubbing alcohol and a lint-free cloth.
- Apply a tiny dab of dielectric grease inside the electrical connector opening to help prevent corrosion.
- Push the electrical connector onto the new bulb base until it clicks.
- Line up the bulb’s three tabs with the matching slots in the headlight housing.
- Push the bulb into the housing and twist it clockwise until it stops and feels locked. Hand-tight only.
Step 5: Replace the high beam bulb (9005) – driver side
- Locate the inner bulb connector on the same headlight; this is the high beam 9005.
- Twist the bulb base counterclockwise about a quarter turn and pull it straight out.
- Press the tab to unplug the electrical connector from the old bulb.
- Take the new 9005 bulb out of the package, holding only the base, not the glass.
- Apply a small dab of dielectric grease in the connector if desired.
- Plug the connector onto the bulb until it clicks securely.
- Insert the bulb into the opening, align the tabs, and twist clockwise until it locks in place.
Step 6: Repeat low and high beam bulb replacement – passenger side
- Move to the passenger side of the Rogue and open the hood if it isn’t already open.
- Access is usually easier on this side, but you may still move any flexible air ducting gently if needed using a flat trim removal tool or by hand.
- Repeat the same process as Steps 3–5 to replace the H11 low beam and 9005 high beam bulbs.
- Do both sides so light color and brightness match.
Step 7: Reinstall anything you moved and check routing
- Make sure any plastic air duct or covers you moved are back in their original position and fully seated.
- Confirm all headlight connectors are fully clicked into place and that no wires are pinched or stretched.
- If you disconnected the battery, reinstall the negative cable on the battery post using a 10mm socket or 10mm wrench and snug it down by hand plus a small extra turn.
Step 8: Test the headlights
- Close the hood securely.
- Switch the ignition to ON and turn the headlight switch to the low beam position.
- Walk to the front and check that both low beams are on and look even in brightness and color.
- Switch to high beams and confirm both high beams turn on.
- If one side does not work, turn everything OFF and recheck that bulb is fully seated and the connector is fully clicked in.
✅ After Repair
- Take the Rogue to a dark wall or garage door at night, park on level ground about 3–4 meters away, and verify the beam pattern looks even left to right.
- If the lights seem aimed too high or low after bulb replacement only, the aim usually has not changed; recheck that bulbs are seated flat and fully locked.
- Dispose of old bulbs in regular trash, but wrap them so they don’t shatter in the bin.
💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
Shop Cost: $140–$220 (parts + labor)
DIY Cost: $30–$70 (parts only, both sides low + high)
You Save: $70–$190 by doing it yourself!
Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100–$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5–1.0 hours.
