How to Replace Headlight Bulbs on a 2020 Ford Escape (Both Sides)
Step-by-step DIY guide with tools, parts list, safety tips, and full headlight bulb replacement instructions

🔧 Escape - Headlight Bulb Replacement
You’ll be replacing the headlight bulbs on your Escape by accessing them from under the hood and behind the headlight assemblies. The exact steps depend on whether your lights are standard halogen bulbs or factory LEDs.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 30-60 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the engine off, remove the key, and let everything cool before working near the headlights.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of new halogen bulbs with bare fingers; skin oil can cause them to burn out early.
- ⚠️ Keep loose clothing and hair away from belts and fans under the hood.
- ⚠️ If your Escape has factory LED headlights, the light source is usually not a simple bulb and may require replacing the complete headlamp unit.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park the Escape on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Turn off all lights and remove the key from the ignition.
- Open the hood using the interior hood release and the hood latch at the front.
- Make sure you have good lighting so you can clearly see behind the headlight assemblies.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which headlight type you have
- Look at the front of your headlight with the lights on: if the low beam looks like a bright, clean white with a sharp cutoff line and no visible bulb, it is likely LED; if you can see a small bulb and the light is more yellowish, it is likely halogen.
- If your Escape has LED low beams, the “bulb” is integrated and not serviceable in the normal way; usually the entire headlight assembly must be replaced. In that case, stop here and tell me if you want instructions for full headlamp removal instead.
Step 2: Access the rear of the headlight
- With the hood open, stand in front of the Escape and look down behind the headlight on the side you’re working on (driver or passenger).
- You’ll see round plastic caps or covers on the back of the headlight. These cover the bulbs.
- If any trim or small plastic cover is in the way, use the flathead screwdriver or trim clip removal tool to gently pop out the clips.
Step 3: Remove the headlight rear cover
- Grasp the plastic cap for the bulb you want to change (low beam is usually the outer position, high beam toward the inner side).
- Turn the cap counterclockwise by hand to unlock it and pull it off. If it is tight, use mechanic gloves for better grip.
- Set the cap aside where it won’t get lost.
Step 4: Disconnect the bulb connector
- Look inside the opening: you’ll see the bulb base with a small plug (connector) attached.
- Grip the connector and pull it straight back. If there is a tab, gently lift it with the flathead screwdriver while pulling.
- Pull on the connector, not the wires.
Step 5: Remove the old bulb
- Once the connector is off, grasp the base of the bulb.
- Turn the bulb counterclockwise about a quarter turn and pull it straight out of the housing.
- Note the position of the bulb tabs so you can match it when installing the new one.
Step 6: Prepare the new bulb
- Take the new bulb out of its package without touching the glass. Hold it by the plastic base.
- If you touched the glass, clean it gently with rubbing alcohol and a lint‑free cloth.
- Put a tiny smear of dielectric grease inside the connector opening to help prevent corrosion.
Step 7: Install the new bulb
- Align the tabs on the bulb with the slots in the headlight opening.
- Insert the bulb fully, then turn it clockwise until it locks into place.
- If it won’t turn, remove and realign the tabs.
Step 8: Reconnect the bulb connector
- Push the electrical connector back onto the bulb base until it clicks or feels fully seated.
- Gently tug to confirm it’s locked in place.
Step 9: Reinstall the rear cover
- Place the plastic cap back over the bulb opening.
- Turn it clockwise by hand until it stops. It should feel snug and sealed.
- Reinstall any trim or clips you removed using the trim clip removal tool to press them back in.
Step 10: Repeat for the other side and other beam
- Repeat Steps 2–9 for the opposite headlight so brightness and color match.
- If you’re also changing the high beams, repeat the same steps for the high‑beam bulb position.
Step 11: Check headlight aim (basic check)
- Park about 3–4 meters from a flat wall on level ground at night.
- Turn on the low beams and compare the height and pattern left vs right.
- If one side looks wildly higher, the bulb may not be fully seated. Remove the cap and reseat that bulb.
âś… After Repair
- Turn on low beams and high beams and verify both work on both sides.
- Check turn signals and parking lights, just to be sure nothing was disturbed.
- Take a short drive at night to confirm the road is lit evenly without dark spots or glare.
