🔧 Telluride - Headlight Bulb Replacement
On your Telluride S, the bulbs (if equipped with halogen headlights) are serviced from behind each headlamp inside the engine bay. You’ll remove the rear dust cover, twist out the bulb, and install the new one without touching the glass.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn headlights OFF and let bulbs cool before touching.
- ⚠️ Do not touch halogen bulb glass with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life).
- ⚠️ Support the hood securely and keep loose clothing away from fans/belts.
- ⚠️ If your Telluride has LED headlamps (no replaceable bulb), bulb replacement is not serviceable—assembly repair is different.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight
- Small flathead screwdriver
- Trim clip removal tool
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Headlight bulbs (match bulb type printed on old bulb) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease (bulb connector) - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and turn the engine OFF.
- Open the hood and use a flashlight to look behind the headlamp for a round rear dust cover.
- Please confirm 1 thing so I match the exact bulb/location: are we replacing the low beams, the high beams, or both?
- If you do not see a removable rear dust cover and there’s a sealed LED module, tell me that—your Telluride would use a different procedure.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the rear of the headlamp
- Open the hood and locate the back side of the headlamp on the driver side.
- If an air snorkel/upper cover blocks access, remove any push-clips using a trim clip removal tool. (A trim clip is a plastic fastener you pry up and pull out.)
- Use a flashlight to identify which rear cover/connector corresponds to the bulb you’re replacing (low vs high beam).
Step 2: Remove the rear dust cover
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Twist the round rear dust cover counterclockwise by hand and pull it off.
- If a cover tab is tight, gently help it with a small flathead screwdriver—do not crack the cover.
Step 3: Disconnect the bulb electrical connector
- Pull the electrical connector straight off the bulb base.
- If there is a lock tab, press the tab using a small flathead screwdriver and then pull the connector off.
Step 4: Remove the old bulb
- Rotate the bulb base counterclockwise and pull the bulb straight out.
- Look at the old bulb base and note the bulb type printed on it—use that to match the new bulbs exactly.
Step 5: Install the new bulb
- With nitrile gloves on, insert the new bulb into the housing, aligning the tabs.
- Rotate the bulb clockwise until it locks fully in place. Do not force it.
- Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the connector seal area, then reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
Step 6: Reinstall the dust cover and repeat on the other side
- Reinstall the rear dust cover and twist clockwise until it seats evenly all the way around.
- Repeat Steps 1–5 on the passenger side headlamp.
- Reinstall any push-clips/covers you removed using the trim clip removal tool.
âś… After Repair
- Turn the headlight switch ON and verify both sides illuminate correctly (low beam and/or high beam).
- Check that the dust covers are fully sealed to prevent condensation inside the headlamp.
- If a bulb doesn’t work, recheck the connector seating and that the bulb is fully locked in the housing.
