How to Replace Headlight Bulbs on a 2019 Toyota Highlander (Low & High Beam)
Step-by-step bulb access guide, halogen vs LED identification, required tools/parts, and safety tips

🔧 Highlander - Headlight Bulb Replacement (Both Sides)
Your Highlander may have either replaceable halogen headlight bulbs or non-serviceable LED low beams (the “bulb” isn’t replaceable by itself). First you’ll confirm which type you have, then replace the left and right bulbs from behind the headlamp housing.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5–1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and let the headlamp area cool for 10–15 minutes (bulbs get very hot).
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass of a halogen bulb with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life). Use gloves.
- ⚠️ If you find LED low beams, the LED “bulb” is not serviceable—replacement is typically the headlamp assembly, not a bulb.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for halogen bulb replacement, but keep the key away from the vehicle so lights can’t be turned on accidentally.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Small flathead screwdriver
- Trim clip remover (specialty)
- Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Low beam headlight bulb (vehicle-matched) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- High beam headlight bulb (vehicle-matched) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- Headlamp dust cover seal (if damaged) - Qty: 2
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Turn the headlight switch to OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
- Open the hood and use a flashlight to look behind each headlamp for a removable round dust cap and a twist-lock bulb base.
- If you do not see a removable bulb (instead you see an LED module/heat sink), stop—your low beam is likely LED and not a bulb-swap job.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm what you’re replacing (low beam vs high beam, halogen vs LED)
- Use a flashlight to inspect behind the headlamp.
- Halogen bulb signs: a removable dust cap + a bulb with a 2–3 wire connector and a twist-lock or retaining ring.
- LED low beam signs: a larger built-in module/heat sink and no simple removable bulb.
- If unsure, tell me what you see behind it.
Step 2: Create access (if space is tight)
- If your hand won’t fit, use a trim clip remover (specialty) to remove the plastic push-clips on the upper radiator cover near the headlamp.
- If needed, gently lift the edge of the cover for more room.
- If a clip has a center “pin,” use a small flathead screwdriver to pop the center up slightly, then pull the clip out.
Step 3: Remove the dust cover (halogen-equipped housings)
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Reach behind the headlamp and remove the round rubber/plastic dust cover (usually twists or pulls off by hand).
- Set the cover aside somewhere clean so dirt doesn’t get inside it.
Step 4: Disconnect the bulb connector
- Use your gloved hand to press the connector lock tab, then pull the connector straight off the bulb.
- If it’s stuck, use a small flathead screwdriver to gently help the lock tab—don’t pry hard.
Step 5: Remove the bulb
- Twist the bulb base counterclockwise (usually about 1/8 to 1/4 turn) and pull it straight out.
- Keep the bulb pointed outward so you don’t scrape the reflector inside the housing.
Step 6: Install the new bulb (do not touch the glass)
- Use nitrile gloves to handle the new bulb by the base.
- Line up the bulb’s tabs with the housing slots, insert fully, then twist clockwise until it locks.
- If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it clean and dry (or replace the bulb).
Step 7: Reconnect the connector and reinstall the dust cover
- Push the connector back onto the bulb until it clicks.
- Reinstall the dust cover (make sure it’s fully seated all the way around). This keeps moisture out.
Step 8: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 2–7 for the other headlight so both sides match in brightness and color.
Step 9: If your low beams are LED (not bulb-replaceable)
- Use a flashlight to confirm there is no removable bulb access.
- In that case, the usual repair is replacing the headlamp assembly (and sometimes a module), not a bulb swap.
- Tell me whether you’re trying to replace low beams or high beams, and what the back of the headlamp looks like, and I’ll point you to the correct next steps.
âś… After Repair
- Turn headlights ON and confirm both sides work on low and high beam.
- Check that the dust covers are fully seated (no gaps).
- If one side doesn’t light, turn lights OFF and re-check the connector is fully clicked in.
đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost
Shop Cost: ₹1,000–₹3,500 (parts + labor, depends on bulb/LED type)
DIY Cost: ₹600–₹2,500 (parts only, depends on bulb type)
You Save: ₹400–₹1,500 by doing it yourself!
Shop labor rates vary locally; a shop usually books 0.5–1.0 hours for halogen bulbs.
