🔧 Maxima - Headlight Bulb Replacement

On your Maxima, “headlight bulbs” can mean different things because the low beams may be LED (often not a replaceable bulb) while the high beams are typically a replaceable halogen bulb. I’ll show you how to confirm what you have and then replace both sides the correct way.

Difficulty Level: Beginner-Intermediate | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn lights OFF and let housings cool 10 minutes before touching.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable if you’ll be unplugging headlamp connectors or working tight near wiring.
  • ⚠️ Never touch a halogen bulb’s glass with bare fingers; oil can shorten bulb life. Use clean nitrile gloves.
  • ⚠️ Support the car with jack stands if you raise it to access the wheel liner.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 3/8" ratchet
  • 6" extension
  • Phillips screwdriver #2
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • High beam headlight bulbs - Qty: 2
  • Front wheel liner clips - Qty: 4-10
  • Low beam LED headlamp assembly - Qty: 2 (only if low beam is LED and failed)

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlight switch to OFF and remove the key/fob from the car.
  • If you need more room, turn the steering wheel away from the side you’re working on (this opens access near the wheel liner).
  • If disconnecting the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative terminal and isolate it so it can’t spring back.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Identify which “headlight bulb” you’re replacing (low vs high)

  • Turn the headlights ON (low beams) and walk in front of your Maxima to confirm which light is out.
  • Then switch to HIGH beams and confirm if the other light is out instead.
  • Use a flashlight and look at the back of the headlamp housing: a removable twist-lock bulb cover typically indicates a replaceable halogen bulb.

Step 2: Decide the correct repair path

  • If the failed light is HIGH beam: proceed to Step 3 (bulb replacement).
  • If the failed light is LOW beam and your Maxima has LED low beams: the LED is often part of the headlamp assembly and is not a simple “bulb.” Proceed to Step 6 (assembly replacement overview).

Step 3: Access the rear of the headlamp (engine bay or wheel liner)

  • Open the hood and use a flashlight to locate the rear of the headlamp on the side you’re working on.
  • If access is tight, raise the front corner of the car using a floor jack, set it on jack stands, and place wheel chocks on the opposite wheels.
  • Remove the front wheel liner fasteners near the front bumper corner using a trim clip removal tool and Phillips screwdriver #2.
  • Tip: Save clips in a cup.

Step 4: Remove the high beam bulb

  • Reach the bulb socket at the rear of the headlamp and unplug the connector by pressing the tab and pulling straight back (use nitrile gloves for grip).
  • Twist the bulb counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it straight out.
  • Do not force it—if it won’t turn, re-check you’re on the correct socket.

Step 5: Install the new high beam bulb (repeat for the other side)

  • With nitrile gloves on, insert the new bulb into the housing (same orientation as the old one).
  • Twist clockwise until it locks fully.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
  • Reinstall the wheel liner clips/screws using the trim clip removal tool and Phillips screwdriver #2.

Step 6: If your low beam is LED (not a bulb) — headlamp assembly replacement overview

  • If the low beam is LED and failed, the fix is commonly replacing the entire headlamp assembly (left or right), not a bulb.
  • This usually requires removing parts of the front bumper cover and headlamp mounting bolts using a 10mm socket, 3/8" ratchet, and 6" extension.
  • If you want, tell me whether your failed light is LOW beam or HIGH beam, and I’ll give you the exact step-by-step for the correct path.

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the headlights ON and confirm both sides work on low beam and high beam.
  • Check that the bulb is seated (no flicker) and the connector is fully latched.
  • If you removed the wheel liner, verify all clips are installed and nothing rubs the tire when steering full left/right.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $120-$300 (parts + labor) for high beam bulbs

DIY Cost: $30-$90 (parts only) for a pair of high beam bulbs

You Save: $90-$210 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
