🔧 Golf - Headlight Bulb Replacement

On your Golf S, the headlight bulbs are accessed from behind the headlight housing in the engine bay. The job is mostly about getting the rear dust cover off, swapping the bulb without touching the glass, then sealing everything back up to keep moisture out.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the headlight switch OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let the headlights cool fully; bulbs and housings get very hot.
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves and do not touch the new bulb’s glass; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Make sure the rear dust cover seals back on completely to prevent condensation.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Torx T25 screwdriver

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulb (H7, halogen) - Qty: 2 Replace in pairs
  • High beam/DRL bulb (H15, halogen) - Qty: 2 Replace in pairs

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and pop the hood.
  • Turn the headlight switch to OFF and remove the key.
  • Look at the writing on the old bulb (or the cap label) to confirm type: most Golf S halogen headlights use H7 (low beam) and H15 (high beam/DRL).
  • Tip: Take a quick photo before unplugging anything.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Create working room behind the headlight

  • Use a flashlight to look behind each headlight and find the round/oval rear dust cover.
  • If your hand space is tight on one side, remove the upper intake snorkel/duct fasteners using a Torx T25 screwdriver, then lift the snorkel out of the way.
  • Torque: Tighten the snorkel screws snug (plastic fasteners typically have no published torque; do not over-tighten).

Step 2: Remove the rear dust cover

  • Wear nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Twist the rear dust cover counterclockwise by hand and pull it off.
  • If it’s stuck, use a small flathead screwdriver to gently nudge a tab/edge (do not crack the cover).

Step 3: Replace the LOW beam bulb (H7)

  • Pull the electrical connector straight off the bulb (wiggle gently by hand; don’t yank the wires).
  • Release the bulb retaining spring clip (a wire clip that flips down); use your fingers or a small flathead screwdriver carefully if needed. Retaining spring clip = the wire latch holding the bulb.
  • Pull the old H7 bulb straight out.
  • Install the new H7 bulb in the same orientation (match the tabs/notches). Do not touch the glass.
  • Re-latch the spring clip, then push the connector back on firmly.

Step 4: Replace the HIGH beam/DRL bulb (H15) (if that’s the “other headlight bulb” you mean)

  • Locate the H15 bulb holder (it typically has a twist-lock base).
  • Turn the bulb holder counterclockwise about 1/8–1/4 turn by hand, then pull it out.
  • Swap in the new H15 bulb, then reinsert and twist clockwise to lock.
  • Make sure it fully seats; a half-seated holder can cause flickering or moisture entry.

Step 5: Reinstall the dust cover and any ducting you moved

  • Reinstall the rear dust cover and twist clockwise until fully seated all the way around.
  • Reinstall the intake snorkel/duct using the Torx T25 screwdriver.
  • Torque: Tighten screws snug (do not strip plastic).

Step 6: Repeat on the other headlight

  • Use the same process for the other side so both bulbs match color and brightness.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the car and test: low beams, high beams, and DRLs (if applicable).
  • Check the dash for any bulb-out warning.
  • At night, verify the beam pattern looks even left-to-right; if it looks off, recheck bulb seating and dust cover seal.
  • Tip: If one new bulb is dim, reseat the connector.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $120-$300 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $30-$120 (parts only, depending on bulb type/brand)

You Save: $90-$180 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
