🔧 Tacoma - Headlight Bulb Replacement

You’ll be replacing the headlight bulbs from behind the headlight assemblies, inside the engine bay. On this generation, low and high beams are separate bulbs, so you’ll do the same steps on both sides.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 30-45 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition off and remove the key before working near the headlights.
  • ⚠️ Let the engine bay cool if you’ve been driving; parts can be very hot.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of new halogen bulbs with bare fingers; skin oil can make them burn out early.
  • ⚠️ Work on level ground and keep the parking brake fully engaged.
  • ⚠️ If you disconnect the battery for safety, you may lose radio presets and clock settings.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 🛠️ Safety glasses
  • 🛠️ Mechanic gloves
  • 🛠️ Clean lint-free cloth
  • 🛠️ Flathead screwdriver (small)
  • 🛠️ 10mm socket
  • 🛠️ 1/4" ratchet
  • 🛠️ 6" socket extension
  • 🛠️ Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 🔩 Low beam headlight bulb (H11 halogen) - Qty: 2 Replace in pairs
  • 🔩 High beam/DRL headlight bulb (9005/HB3 halogen) - Qty: 2 Replace in pairs
  • 🔩 Dielectric grease (for electrical connectors) - Qty: 1 small tube
  • 🔩 Nitrile gloves - Qty: 1 box

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Tacoma on level ground, set the parking brake, and switch headlights to OFF.
  • Open the hood and secure it with the hood prop rod.
  • If you feel nervous working with live circuits, you can disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket, but it’s not strictly required for just bulb replacement.
  • Have your new bulbs out of their boxes but do not remove any protective caps or touch the glass yet.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Identify low beam vs high beam on each headlight

  • Use a flashlight to look at the back of the headlight from inside the engine bay.
  • On each side, the low beam (H11) is the inner/bigger projector-style bulb, and the high beam (9005) is the outer reflector-style bulb.
  • No fasteners are removed in this step, so no torque specification is required.

Step 2: Gain access on the driver side

  • On the driver side, space is tighter due to the battery.
  • If needed for hand room, use a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension to loosen the battery hold-down nuts just enough to gently push the battery slightly toward the fender for space. Do not remove the hold-down completely.
  • When retightening later, snug the nuts by hand; no specific torque spec is required as long as the battery is secure and does not move.
  • Only loosen enough to move, not to remove.

Step 3: Remove the low beam bulb (H11) on one side

  • Reach behind the headlight and locate the low beam connector; it has two wires going to a round bulb base.
  • Press the tab on the electrical connector with your thumb and pull the connector straight back by hand. Use a flathead screwdriver (small) gently only if the tab is stuck.
  • Once the connector is off, grip the plastic base of the bulb and turn it counter-clockwise about a quarter-turn.
  • Pull the bulb straight out from the housing.
  • No bolts are removed in this step, so no torque specification is required.

Step 4: Install the new low beam bulb (H11)

  • Put on mechanic gloves or nitrile gloves and handle the new bulb only by the plastic base. Do not touch the glass.
  • If the bulb has a plastic cap on the glass, remove it now without touching the glass.
  • Line up the three small tabs on the bulb base with the slots in the headlight opening.
  • Insert the bulb straight in, then turn it clockwise until it stops and feels snug.
  • Apply a tiny dab of dielectric grease inside the connector if you have it, then push the electrical connector onto the bulb until it clicks.
  • No fasteners are tightened here, so no torque specification is required.

Step 5: Remove the high beam bulb (9005) on the same side

  • Locate the high beam bulb on the same headlight (outer position behind the headlight).
  • Press the tab on the electrical connector and pull it straight back by hand; use the flathead screwdriver (small) gently if needed.
  • Grip the bulb base and turn it counter-clockwise about a quarter-turn, then pull straight out.
  • Again, no bolts are removed in this step, so no torque specification is required.

Step 6: Install the new high beam bulb (9005)

  • With gloves on, handle the new 9005 bulb by the base only.
  • Align the tabs with the slots in the headlight and insert the bulb straight in.
  • Turn it clockwise until it stops and feels secure.
  • Add a small dab of dielectric grease to the electrical connector and push it onto the bulb until it clicks fully into place.
  • No threaded fasteners here, so no torque specification is required.

Step 7: Repeat low and high beam replacement on the other side

  • Move to the passenger side and repeat Steps 3–6 for both low and high beam bulbs.
  • On the passenger side, you may need to move the intake snorkel slightly: if it’s in your way, gently flex it for access; no tools are usually needed.
  • No bolts are removed if you only flex the snorkel, so no torque specification is required.

Step 8: Reposition any loosened parts and final check under hood

  • If you loosened the battery hold-down, use the 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet to re-snug the nuts so the battery cannot move by hand.
  • Make sure all connectors are fully clicked in and no wires are pinched.
  • Double-check that each bulb base is fully seated and cannot rotate loosely.
  • No precise torque spec is required for the hold-down; just ensure the battery is firmly secured and does not slide.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the ignition to ON (engine can be off) and switch on the low beams; verify both low beams work and have equal brightness.
  • Switch to high beams and verify both high beams come on.
  • Walk in front of your Tacoma and check that the light pattern looks even left-to-right.
  • If the lights look too high or low, use a flat wall at night and adjust the headlight aim following local regulations.
  • Recheck under the hood after a short drive to be sure all connectors are still secure.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $160-$240 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $40-$80 (parts only, for four bulbs)

You Save: $120-$160 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
