🔧 RAV4 - Headlight Bulb Replacement

You’ll be replacing the halogen headlight bulbs from behind the headlight assemblies under the hood. The bulbs twist out of the housing, and you unplug and swap them without removing the whole headlight.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5–1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the engine off, set the parking brake, and remove the key.
  • ⚠️ Switch the headlight switch to OFF before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let the engine bay cool if the car was just driven; parts can be hot.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of new halogen bulbs with bare fingers; oil can make them burn out early.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery terminal if you feel unsure around live connectors. Not required, but safer for a first-timer.
  • ⚠️ Work in a well-lit area and keep loose clothing, hair, and jewelry away from moving parts.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 🔹10mm socket
  • 🔹1/4" drive ratchet
  • 🔹6" extension bar (1/4" drive)
  • 🔹Flathead screwdriver (medium)
  • 🔹Needle-nose pliers
  • 🔹Clean shop towels
  • 🔹Disposable nitrile gloves
  • 🔹Safety glasses
  • 🔹Work light or flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 🔹Low beam headlight bulbs (H11 halogen) - Qty: 2 Replace in pairs
  • 🔹High beam headlight bulbs (9005 halogen) - Qty: 2 Optional, if you want all four new
  • 🔹Dielectric grease for electrical connectors - Qty: 1 small tube
  • 🔹Disposable gloves - Qty: 1 box
  • 🔹Rubbing alcohol wipes - Qty: 2–4

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park the RAV4 on level ground, shift to P, and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlight switch to OFF and remove the key.
  • Open the hood and secure it with the prop rod.
  • If you are nervous about electricity, use the 10mm socket and ratchet to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp and move it aside so it cannot spring back.
  • Have your new bulbs unboxed but keep the protective caps on until installation.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Identify the low and high beam bulbs

  • Use your work light or flashlight and look at the back of the headlight from inside the engine bay.
  • On your RAV4, the low beam (H11) is the outer bulb (closer to the fender) and the high beam (9005) is more toward the center.
  • Check the new bulb boxes so you don’t mix H11 and 9005.

Step 2: Gain working room on the driver’s side

  • The driver’s side is tighter because of the battery, but you usually do not need to remove the battery.
  • If access feels tight, use the 10mm socket and ratchet to remove any small plastic brackets or covers in the way (note where each bolt goes).
  • Torque for any small 10mm bracket bolts: 5–7 Nm (4–5 ft-lbs) when you reinstall.

Step 3: Remove the driver-side low beam bulb (H11)

  • Put on disposable nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Reach behind the headlight to the outermost bulb socket (low beam).
  • Hold the plastic base of the bulb firmly and twist it counterclockwise about a quarter turn to unlock. No tool is needed here, just your hand.
  • Gently pull the bulb straight back out of the housing.
  • Press the release tab on the bulb connector with your thumb and pull the connector off the bulb. If it’s stuck, use needle-nose pliers gently on the plastic tab, not the wires.

Step 4: Install the new driver-side low beam bulb

  • If you accidentally touched the glass of the new bulb, clean it with a rubbing alcohol wipe and let it dry completely.
  • Apply a tiny smear of dielectric grease to the rubber seal and to the connector pins if you have it.
  • Plug the vehicle connector onto the new H11 bulb until it clicks.
  • Align the three tabs on the bulb base with the slots in the headlight housing.
  • Insert the bulb gently, then twist it clockwise until it stops and feels snug. No tools, just hand-tight.
  • Do not force it; back out and realign if it resists.

Step 5: Repeat low beam replacement on the passenger side

  • On the passenger side, access is usually easier.
  • Again, find the outer bulb socket (low beam), twist it counterclockwise, pull it out, and unplug the connector by hand or with needle-nose pliers if tight.
  • Connect the new H11 bulb, insert into the housing, and twist clockwise until fully locked.
  • Make sure the bulb sits flat; no gap at the seal.

Step 6: Replace the high beam bulbs (optional but recommended)

  • If you’re also replacing high beams, repeat a similar process with the inner sockets (9005 bulbs).
  • Reach behind the headlight to the inner bulb, twist the socket counterclockwise, and pull the bulb out.
  • Unplug the 9005 bulb from its connector, using needle-nose pliers gently on the release tab if needed.
  • Connect the new 9005 bulb, insert into the housing, and twist clockwise until locked.
  • Do driver side first, then passenger side.

Step 7: Reinstall any brackets or covers

  • If you removed any small brackets or plastic covers, put them back now.
  • Use the 10mm socket, extension, and ratchet to reinstall the bolts.
  • Torque to 5–7 Nm (4–5 ft-lbs) — just snug with one hand on the ratchet.

Step 8: Reconnect the battery (if you disconnected it)

  • Place the negative battery cable back on the negative terminal.
  • Use the 10mm socket and ratchet to tighten the clamp bolt.
  • Torque to 5–7 Nm (4–5 ft-lbs); don’t overtighten. The clamp should not move if you twist it by hand.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the ignition to ON (or start the engine) and switch on the low beams; walk in front of the RAV4 and confirm both low beams are lit and similar brightness.
  • Switch to high beams and confirm both high beams work.
  • Check around the bulb bases for any wobble or looseness by gently tapping the housing; bulbs should stay solid.
  • At night, verify the beam pattern on a wall: both sides should be at similar height and not pointing wildly up or down.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $120–$220 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $30–$80 (parts only, depending on bulb type/brand)

You Save: $90–$140 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100–$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5–1.0 hours.
