🔧 Forester - Headlight Bulb Replacement

You’ll replace the headlight bulbs by accessing the rear of each headlamp housing from inside the engine bay. The main challenge on your Forester is tight working space, so a few nearby pieces (like the washer fill neck or intake duct) may need to be moved for access.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 0.8-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and let bulbs cool before touching.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ If your Forester has HID (xenon) low beams, the system uses high voltage; disconnect the battery negative cable and wait 5 minutes before unplugging the HID igniter.
  • ⚠️ Support the hood securely and keep tools away from the radiator fan area.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is recommended (required for HID low beams).

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 10mm ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulb (H11 halogen) - Qty: 2
  • Low beam headlight bulb (D4S HID/xenon) - Qty: 2
  • High beam headlight bulb (9005 halogen) - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and use a flashlight to identify the rear covers/connectors on each headlamp.
  • Disconnect the battery negative terminal using a 10mm socket and 10mm ratchet. Required for HID; recommended for all.
  • Assumption note: your Forester may have either H11 halogen or D4S HID for low beams—follow the matching path below.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the battery

  • Use a 10mm socket and 10mm ratchet to loosen the negative battery clamp nut.
  • Lift the negative cable off and tuck it aside so it cannot spring back.

Step 2: Create room to reach the back of each headlight

  • Right side (passenger side): pull the washer fluid fill neck straight up/out of its holder (use needle-nose pliers only if a clip resists). This usually gives enough hand room.
  • Left side (driver side): remove the front intake snorkel/clips if it blocks access (use trim clip removal tool and Phillips #2 screwdriver as needed).
  • A trim clip tool is a small forked lever that pops plastic clips out without breaking them.

Step 3: Remove the low beam bulb (do one side at a time)

  • Reach behind the headlamp and find the low beam bulb connector (typically the larger rear connector on the projector/low-beam area).
  • Put on nitrile gloves.
  • Press the connector tab and pull the connector straight off the bulb (use needle-nose pliers gently only if needed).
  • Rotate the bulb base counterclockwise to unlock it, then pull it straight out.
  • If it won’t turn, re-seat and try again.

Step 4: Install the new low beam bulb

  • Halogen path (H11): insert the new H11 bulb without touching the glass, align the tabs, then rotate clockwise to lock.
  • HID path (D4S): insert the new D4S bulb in the same orientation as removed, then lock it in place. Reconnect the igniter/connector fully until it clicks.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector (push until it clicks/locks).

Step 5: Repeat for the other headlight

  • Use the same steps on the other side.
  • Reinstall the washer fill neck and any intake duct/clips you moved (use trim clip removal tool and Phillips #2 screwdriver as needed).

Step 6: Optional — replace the high beam bulbs (9005) if that’s what you meant by “headlight bulbs”

  • Locate the high beam bulb socket on the rear of the headlamp (usually closer to the inner side of the housing).
  • Unplug the connector, rotate the 9005 bulb counterclockwise, and pull out.
  • Install the new 9005 bulb (no glass touching), rotate clockwise to lock, and reconnect the connector.

Step 7: Reconnect the battery

  • Reinstall the negative cable and tighten with a 10mm socket and 10mm ratchet.
  • No special torque is required here—tighten firmly so the clamp won’t rotate by hand.

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the headlights on and confirm both low beams work (and high beams if replaced).
  • Check that the bulb sits evenly and the beam pattern looks normal on a wall at night.
  • If a bulb doesn’t light: turn lights off, re-check the connector fully seated, and verify the bulb is locked in the housing.
  • Replace bulbs in pairs for matching brightness.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $160-$450 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $30-$120 (halogen parts only) or $120-$300 (HID parts only)

You Save: $80-$250+ by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.7-1.2 hours.
