How to Replace Headlight Bulbs on a 2016 Ford Explorer (HID D3S Low Beam & 9005 High Beam)
Step-by-step headlamp removal, required tools/parts, safety tips for HID systems, and torque specs

🔧 Explorer - Headlight Bulb Replacement
On your Explorer, the clean way to replace headlight bulbs is usually to pull the headlamp assembly forward for access. This prevents forcing your hands into tight spaces and helps you avoid breaking tabs or touching the bulb glass.
Assumption: Your Limited may have HID low beams (D3S) and halogen high beams (9005). Steps below cover both; replace only what matches your headlight type.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Let headlights cool before touching anything near the bulbs.
- ⚠️ If equipped with HID: the system uses high voltage; disconnect the battery and wait 5 minutes before opening the headlamp.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Support the headlamp so it doesn’t hang by the wiring.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is recommended (required for HID low beams).

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and remove the key/fob from the vehicle area.
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket. (This is mandatory if you have HID low beams.)
- Tip: Take a quick photo of connector routing.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the upper radiator cover fasteners
- Use a trim clip removal tool to pop up the centers of the plastic push clips.
- Remove the push clips and lift off the upper radiator cover panel.
- Tip: Work gently to avoid breaking clips.
Step 2: Unbolt the headlamp assembly
- Locate the headlamp mounting bolts at the top of the headlamp.
- Use an 8mm socket or 10mm socket (varies by fastener) with a 1/4" ratchet and 6" extension to remove the bolts.
- Set the bolts aside where they won’t be lost.
Step 3: Release and pull the headlamp forward
- With both hands, pull the headlamp straight forward to release the lower locating pin/retainer.
- If it feels stuck, use a small flat-blade screwdriver gently at the tab area (do not pry hard).
- Support the headlamp so it doesn’t drop or scratch the bumper.
Step 4: Disconnect the main headlamp electrical connector
- Press the connector lock tab and unplug the harness from the back of the headlamp.
- (A “lock tab” is the small plastic latch that prevents the plug from backing out.)
Step 5: Replace the bulb (Low beam HID D3S, if equipped)
- Remove the rear dust cover (twist or unclip depending on housing).
- Unplug the igniter/connector from the back of the HID bulb.
- Release the bulb retaining ring/lock (usually a twist-lock) and remove the bulb.
- Install the new D3S bulb without touching the glass (wear nitrile gloves).
- Reinstall the retaining ring/lock, reconnect the igniter/connector, and reinstall the dust cover fully seated.
- Tip: A crooked dust cover can cause fogging.
Step 6: Replace the bulb (High beam halogen 9005, if equipped)
- Locate the high-beam bulb socket at the rear of the headlamp.
- Twist the bulb counterclockwise by hand to unlock, then pull it out.
- Install the new 9005 bulb (do not touch the glass), then twist clockwise to lock.
Step 7: Reconnect, reinstall, and torque the headlamp
- Reconnect the main headlamp electrical connector until it clicks.
- Slide the headlamp back into position, making sure the lower locator seats fully.
- Reinstall the headlamp bolts using an 8mm socket or 10mm socket.
- Torque to 62 in-lb (7 Nm).
Step 8: Reinstall the radiator cover panel
- Position the cover panel back in place.
- Reinstall push clips by pushing the outer body in, then push the center pin down using your thumb.
Step 9: Reconnect battery and test
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket.
- Turn on headlights (low beam and high beam) and verify both sides work.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the headlights on and confirm: low beams, high beams, and no flickering.
- If a bulb doesn’t light, recheck the connector seating and bulb lock position.
- Check headlamp aim at night; if the beam looks noticeably off, the lamp may not be seated fully.
- Tip: Replace bulbs in pairs for color match.
