🔧 Traverse - Headlight Bulb Replacement
On your Traverse, the easiest way to reach the headlight bulbs is typically through the front wheel-well liner (the plastic splash shield inside the fender). You’ll remove a few fasteners, peel the liner back, swap the bulb(s), then reinstall everything.
Assumption: You mean replacing both low-beam headlight bulbs (left + right). (High-beam bulbs are a different bulb type and are replaced similarly.)
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.8-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Let the headlights cool down before touching the bulb area (bulbs and housings get very hot).
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass on a halogen bulb with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Support the vehicle with jack stands if you lift it—never rely on a jack alone.
- ⚠️ Turn the headlight switch OFF and remove the key before starting.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Low beam headlight bulb (H11) - Qty: 2
- High beam headlight bulb (9005) - Qty: 2
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Chock a rear wheel with wheel chocks.
- Turn the steering wheel full-left to access the right side, and full-right to access the left side (this creates more room at the liner).
- Tip: Replacing bulbs in pairs keeps brightness even.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the front wheel lug nuts (optional but easier)
- Use a lug wrench to slightly loosen the front wheel lug nuts on the side you’re working on (about 1/4 turn).
- If you won’t remove the wheel, you can skip this step, but access may be tighter.
Step 2: Lift and support the front corner
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front corner at the proper jacking point.
- Set the vehicle onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Give the vehicle a gentle shake to confirm it’s stable.
Step 3: Remove the front wheel (recommended)
- Use a 22mm socket with a ratchet to remove the lug nuts, then remove the wheel.
- When reinstalling later: Torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs) using a 22mm socket.
Step 4: Peel back the front wheel-well liner
- Use a trim clip removal tool to remove the plastic fasteners along the front portion of the wheel-well liner.
- A “push-pin retainer” is a plastic clip that locks when the center pin is pushed in; use the trim clip removal tool or flathead screwdriver to gently pop the center up, then remove the clip.
- Use a flashlight to locate the opening behind the headlight.
- Pull the liner back just enough to reach the bulb socket.
Step 5: Remove the low-beam bulb (H11)
- Locate the low-beam bulb socket on the back of the headlight assembly (it will have a wiring connector plugged into it).
- Use your gloved hand (or nitrile gloves) to rotate the bulb socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn, then pull it straight out.
- Disconnect the wiring connector from the bulb by pulling it straight off (use a flathead screwdriver gently only if it’s stuck).
Step 6: Install the new low-beam bulb (H11)
- Wear nitrile gloves and avoid touching the glass.
- Plug the wiring connector onto the new bulb until it clicks/fully seats.
- Insert the bulb into the headlight housing, align the tabs, then rotate clockwise to lock it in place.
- Tip: If it won’t lock, it’s misaligned—don’t force it.
Step 7: Quick function test
- Turn the headlight switch ON and confirm the low beam works.
- Turn the lights OFF again before reassembly.
Step 8: Reinstall the wheel-well liner
- Reposition the liner.
- Reinstall all clips using your fingers, then seat them fully with the trim clip removal tool (or gently with the flathead screwdriver).
Step 9: Reinstall the wheel and torque lug nuts
- Install the wheel and hand-thread lug nuts.
- Lower the vehicle off the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern with a 22mm socket and ratchet.
- Final tighten: Torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).
Step 10: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 1–9 for the other headlight.
âś… After Repair
- Turn on low beams and confirm both sides match brightness and color.
- Check high beams, turn signals, and parking lights to ensure nothing else was bumped loose.
- At night, verify headlight aim looks normal; if one seems off, the bulb may not be fully locked in.
