🔧 Civic - Headlight Bulb Replacement

On your Civic, the headlight bulbs are serviced from behind the headlight housings in the engine bay. You’ll remove the electrical connector, twist the bulb out, install the new bulb (without touching the glass), then test the lights.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

Assumption: You want to replace both low-beam bulbs; high-beam steps included too.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and let bulbs cool 10+ minutes (they get very hot).
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers (oil causes early failure); hold by the base.
  • ⚠️ Keep keys out of the car so lights can’t switch on accidentally.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required, but avoid shorting connectors with metal tools.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean shop towel
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulb (H11) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • High beam headlight bulb (9005) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlight switch to OFF and remove the key/fob from the cabin.
  • Open the hood and use a flashlight to locate the rear of each headlight housing.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Identify which bulb you’re replacing (low vs high beam)

  • Use a flashlight to look at the back of the headlight housing.
  • Low beam (H11) is the projector/primary nighttime headlight.
  • High beam (9005) is the brighter “brights” bulb.
  • Tip: Replace bulbs in pairs for matching color.

Step 2: Remove the electrical connector

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Press the locking tab on the connector and pull it straight off the bulb.
  • If it’s stuck, use a small flathead screwdriver to gently help lift the tab while pulling (don’t pry hard).

Step 3: Remove the old bulb

  • Grip the bulb base and twist it counterclockwise about 1/8 to 1/4 turn.
  • Pull the bulb straight out of the housing.
  • Use a flashlight to confirm the bulb’s O-ring seal came out with the bulb (it should be on the bulb base).

Step 4: Install the new bulb (no-touch rule)

  • Use nitrile gloves or hold the new bulb with a clean shop towel.
  • Line up the bulb tabs with the slots in the housing, then insert the bulb fully.
  • Twist clockwise until it locks in place (it should feel snug and stop firmly).
  • If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it with a clean shop towel before installing.

Step 5: Reconnect the electrical connector

  • Push the connector onto the bulb until you feel/hear it click.
  • Gently tug the connector to confirm it’s locked.

Step 6: Repeat on the other side

  • Do the same steps for the other headlight assembly.
  • Tip: Compare both bulbs seated evenly before testing.

Step 7: Test your headlights

  • Turn the headlights ON and check both low beams.
  • Switch to high beams and confirm both high beams work (if you replaced them).
  • If a bulb doesn’t light, turn lights OFF and re-check the connector is fully clicked in.

✅ After Repair

  • Close the hood securely and verify the hood is fully latched.
  • At night, check beam aim on a flat wall; the light pattern should look even left-to-right.
  • Keep the old working bulb (if only one was bad) as an emergency spare.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $120-$260 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $30-$120 (parts only, depending on bulb brand/type)

You Save: $90-$140 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
