Step-by-step bulb swap with tools/parts list, HID safety precautions, and install tips for both sides for 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019
🔧 Yukon - Headlight Bulb Replacement
You’ll replace the bulbs by accessing the back of each headlamp housing from under the hood. The key is working carefully in tight space and avoiding touching the new bulb glass, which can shorten bulb life.
Assumption: Your Yukon has HID (xenon) low beams (common on Denali). Steps below cover HID low beams and the halogen high beams.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 0.8-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚡ HID headlights use high voltage; turn lights OFF, remove key, and disconnect the battery before touching the HID bulb/connector.
- 🔥 Let headlights cool for 10+ minutes before starting.
- 🧤 Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oils create hot spots and can make the bulb fail early.
- 🧱 Support the hood securely and keep tools away from the radiator fan area.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- 6" socket extension
- Trim clip removal tool
- Small flat-blade screwdriver
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Clean microfiber towel
- Dielectric grease
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Low beam HID bulb (D3S) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- High beam halogen bulb (9005) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Turn the headlight switch OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
- Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket.
- Wait 5 minutes so the HID system fully powers down.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Create working room behind the headlamp
- On the passenger side, remove the air intake snorkel/duct if it blocks access: release clips with a trim clip removal tool and loosen any clamp screws with a small flat-blade screwdriver.
- On the driver side, move any obstructing covers/hoses aside gently by hand. Do not kink hoses.
- Tip: Set fasteners in a cup so none disappear.
Step 2: Remove the rear dust cap from the low beam (HID) area
- Reach behind the headlamp and locate the round rear cover (dust cap).
- Twist the cap counterclockwise by hand and pull it off. Place it somewhere clean.
Step 3: Disconnect the HID igniter/connector
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- At the back of the HID bulb, disconnect the electrical connector by pressing the lock tab and pulling straight back.
- If it is stubborn, use a small flat-blade screwdriver gently on the tab (do not pry on the housing).
- Igniter: the plug piece that snaps onto the HID bulb.
Step 4: Remove the HID bulb (D3S)
- Release the bulb retaining ring/lock (varies by housing): rotate the lock ring counterclockwise by hand until it frees the bulb.
- Carefully pull the bulb straight out.
- Use a clean microfiber towel to hold the old bulb so you don’t cut yourself if it breaks.
Step 5: Install the new HID bulb (D3S)
- Without touching the glass, align the bulb tabs with the housing slots and insert the bulb fully.
- Lock it in place by turning the retaining ring clockwise until snug.
- Reconnect the HID connector until it clicks.
- Apply a very thin smear of dielectric grease to the connector seal only (not on the bulb glass).
Step 6: Reinstall the dust cap
- Reinstall the rear cap and twist clockwise until fully seated.
- This keeps moisture out of the headlamp.
Step 7: Replace the high beam bulb (9005) if needed
- Locate the high beam bulb socket on the back of the headlamp (separate from the HID area).
- Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise by hand and remove it.
- Disconnect the bulb from the connector.
- Install the new 9005 bulb without touching the glass, reconnect, then twist clockwise to lock into the housing.
Step 8: Repeat on the other side
- Perform the same steps for the other headlamp.
- Replace bulbs in pairs so color and brightness match left-to-right.
Step 9: Reconnect battery and reassemble
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket.
- Reinstall any intake ducting/covers and clips removed earlier.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the headlights ON and confirm: low beams ignite, high beams work, and both sides match in color.
- Check the dust caps are fully seated (no gaps) to prevent condensation.
- If a new HID bulb does not light, turn lights OFF, disconnect battery, recheck connector seating and bulb lock ring.
💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
Shop Cost: $220-$550 (parts + labor, depends on HID bulb price)
