🔧 Juke - Headlight Bulb Replacement

Replacing headlight bulbs on your Juke is usually done from behind the headlight through the front wheel-well access panel. You’ll remove a small section of the fender liner, swap the bulb, then reinstall everything so it stays sealed from water and dirt.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours

Assumption: Your Juke has either halogen bulbs or HID (xenon) low beams; steps below include both paths.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let headlights cool before touching anything (hot housing can burn you).
  • ⚠️ If equipped with HID/xenon: high voltage is present; disconnect the 12V battery negative cable before unplugging the igniter/ballast.
  • ⚠️ Support the vehicle with jack stands before working in the wheel well; never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oils shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Keep the rear dust cap seated correctly to prevent moisture inside the headlight.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 21mm socket
  • Breaker bar (1/2")
  • Torque wrench (10–150 ft-lbs range)
  • Ratchet (3/8")
  • 10mm socket
  • 3" extension (3/8")
  • Phillips screwdriver #2
  • Trim clip remover (specialty)
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulb (halogen type, commonly H11) - Qty: 2
  • High beam headlight bulb (halogen type, commonly 9005) - Qty: 2
  • Low beam HID/xenon bulb (commonly D2S) - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, turn the lights OFF, and remove the key.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • 🔧 Loosen the front wheel lug nuts slightly using a 21mm socket and breaker bar before lifting.
  • 🔋 If you have HID/xenon low beams, disconnect the battery negative terminal using a 10mm socket. (Negative terminal is the “-” side.)
  • 🧰 A trim clip remover is a small forked tool that pops plastic clips out without breaking them.
  • 🧰 A torque wrench tightens bolts to an exact safe tightness.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift the front corner and remove the wheel

  • Use a floor jack to lift the front corner you’re working on (driver side first is fine).
  • Set the vehicle onto a jack stand at a solid lift point, then gently lower the jack.
  • Remove the lug nuts with a 21mm socket and take the wheel off.

Step 2: Open the wheel-well access to the back of the headlight

  • Use a Phillips screwdriver #2 and trim clip remover (specialty) to remove the fender liner clips/screws at the front of the wheel well.
  • Pull the liner back just enough to reach the rear of the headlight. Use a flashlight to see the bulb sockets.
  • Tip: Don’t yank the liner; it can tear.

Step 3: Identify the bulb you’re replacing

  • Look for the bulb socket and rear dust cap area on the back of the headlight housing using a flashlight.
  • Low beam is typically the larger rear cover nearer the center of the car; high beam is usually a separate socket. (Layouts can vary by headlight type.)

Step 4A: Replace a HALOGEN bulb (typical H11 low beam / 9005 high beam)

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it straight out.
  • Press the lock tab and unplug the connector (use your thumb; avoid yanking wires).
  • Plug the connector into the new bulb.
  • Install the new bulb into the headlight and twist clockwise until it fully locks.
  • Tip: If you touched glass, clean with alcohol.

Step 4B: Replace an HID/XENON low beam bulb (typical D2S)

  • Confirm the battery negative cable is disconnected using a 10mm socket.
  • Remove the rear dust cap/cover (twist or unclip, depending on housing) by hand.
  • Carefully unplug the igniter/connector from the bulb (straight back; do not pry hard).
  • Release the bulb retaining lock (often a wire spring clip or twist-lock ring) by hand.
  • Remove the old bulb straight out and install the new bulb in the same orientation (do not touch the glass).
  • Re-secure the retaining lock, reconnect the igniter/connector, and reinstall the dust cap fully seated.

Step 5: Repeat on the other side

  • Reinstall the first wheel temporarily (hand-tight lug nuts), lower, then move to the other side.
  • Repeat Steps 1–4 for the opposite headlight.

Step 6: Reinstall fender liner and wheels

  • Reposition the fender liner and reinstall the clips/screws using a Phillips screwdriver #2 and trim clip remover (specialty).
  • Install the wheels and snug the lug nuts in a star pattern using a 21mm socket.
  • Lower the vehicle off the jack stands using the floor jack.
  • Torque lug nuts with a torque wrench: Torque to 113 Nm (83 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Restore power (HID cars) and function-check

  • If disconnected, reconnect the battery negative cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Turn headlights ON and confirm both sides work on low and high beam.
  • Check that the dust caps are sealed and the fender liners are secured.

✅ After Repair

  • 🔦 Verify low beams and high beams work and match in color/brightness left-to-right.
  • 💧 After your next car wash or rain, check for condensation inside the headlight (a sign the rear cap isn’t sealed).
  • 🧭 If the beam aim looks off, have headlight aiming checked/adjusted to avoid blinding other drivers.
