How to Replace Headlight Bulbs on a 2015-2017 Audi Q3 (Halogen H7 or Xenon D3S)
Step-by-step low-beam bulb change for both sides with tools, safety tips, and torque specs for 2015, 2016, 2017
š§ Q3 - Headlight Bulb Replacement
You can replace the headlight bulbs from the back of each headlight housing (under the hood). The key is identifying whether your Q3 has Halogen or Xenon/HID low beams, because the bulb type and handling precautions are different.
Assumption: You mean the low-beam headlight bulbs on both sides (left and right).
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 0.8-1.5 hours
ā ļø Safety & Precautions
- ā ļø If equipped with Xenon/HID, the igniter can produce high voltageāturn lights OFF, remove key, and disconnect the battery negative before opening the headlight.
- ā ļø Let bulbs cool fully; they get extremely hot.
- ā ļø Do not touch the glass on any bulb. Oils from your skin can shorten bulb life. Use clean nitrile gloves.
- ā ļø Secure the car on level ground, in Park, with the parking brake set.

š© Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Low-beam headlight bulb (Halogen type, usually H7) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- Low-beam headlight bulb (Xenon/HID type, commonly D3S) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
š Before You Begin
- Pop the hood and support it securely.
- Turn the headlight switch to OFF and remove the key.
- If you have Xenon/HID low beams: disconnect the battery negative terminal (the negative terminal is the ā-ā clamp on the battery).
- Take a quick photo of each bulb connector first.
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the battery (recommended for all, required for Xenon/HID)
- Use a 10mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet to loosen the negative battery clamp nut.
- Lift the clamp off the battery post and tuck it aside so it cannot spring back.
- Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs) when tightening at reassembly.
Step 2: Create working space (do this only if access is tight)
- On the tight side, remove the intake snorkel/upper air duct clips/screws using a Torx T25 driver or Torx T30 driver (varies by duct).
- If the airbox top needs to move: loosen fasteners with a Torx T25 driver and gently shift it just enough to reach the headlight rear cover.
- Use a trim removal tool to pop any plastic push-clips without breaking them.
Step 3: Open the rear headlight access cover
- Use a flashlight to find the round/oval cover at the back of the headlight.
- Twist the cover counterclockwise by hand and remove it (some covers pull straight off after releasing tabs).
- Set the cover someplace clean so dirt doesnāt get inside it.
Step 4A: Replace the bulb (Halogen low beam, usually H7)
- Put on nitrile gloves.
- Pull the electrical connector straight off the bulb (wiggle gently; do not yank wires).
- Release the bulb retainer:
- If itās a spring clip: press and swing it away (the spring clip is a wire latch that holds the bulb tight).
- If itās a locking ring: twist the ring counterclockwise by hand and remove it.
- Remove the old bulb and install the new bulb in the exact same orientation (tabs must seat fully).
- Re-engage the spring clip or locking ring, then reinstall the connector until it clicks/feels fully seated.
Step 4B: Replace the bulb (Xenon/HID low beam, commonly D3S)
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Carefully unplug the igniter/connector from the back of the bulb (it may have a lock tabārelease it gently).
- Remove the bulb retaining ring (usually twists) by turning it counterclockwise by hand.
- Pull the old bulb straight out. Install the new bulb without touching the glass and make sure it seats flat.
- Reinstall the retaining ring (hand-tight). Reconnect the igniter/connector fully.
- If you touched glass, clean with alcohol and lint-free cloth.
Step 5: Refit the rear cover (critical)
- Reinstall the headlight rear cover and twist clockwise until fully locked.
- This cover keeps water outādouble-check itās sealed all the way around.
Step 6: Repeat on the other side
- Do the same bulb type procedure for the opposite headlight.
- Replace bulbs in pairs so color/brightness matches.
Step 7: Reassemble and tighten moved components
- Reinstall any ducts/airbox pieces you moved using a Torx T25 driver or Torx T30 driver.
- If you removed any 10mm fasteners, reinstall them with a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
- Torque to 10 Nm (7 ft-lbs) for small airbox/duct fasteners (snug, do not over-tighten plastic).
Step 8: Reconnect the battery
- Reinstall the negative battery clamp using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
- Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).
ā After Repair
- Turn ignition ON and test: low beams, high beams, turn signals, and DRLs.
- Confirm both low beams match in color and brightness.
- Look for any ābulb outā warning on the dash.
- At night, verify beam aim looks normal; if it seems off, the bulb may not be seated correctly.
