🔧 Tucson - Headlight Bulb Replacement

Replacing both headlight bulbs on your Tucson is a beginner-friendly repair done from behind each headlight housing under the hood. Replace both bulbs together so the brightness and color match side to side.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 30-60 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the headlights and ignition OFF before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let the headlight bulbs cool before touching the rear of the housings.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of halogen bulbs with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves and safety glasses to protect your hands and eyes.
  • ⚠️ Disconnecting the battery is not normally required for this bulb replacement, but keep the lights switched OFF the whole time.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean microfiber towel
  • Flashlight
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4-inch drive ratchet
  • Trim clip removal tool

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulbs H11 - Qty: 2
  • High beam headlight bulbs 9005 - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Tucson on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 💡 Turn the headlight switch OFF.
  • 🔑 Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key.
  • 🧤 Put on nitrile gloves before handling the new bulbs.
  • ℹ️ A trim clip removal tool is a small prying tool used to remove plastic push clips without breaking them.
  • ℹ️ This procedure covers both common bulbs: H11 low beam and 9005 high beam. Replace the pair that is burned out, or replace all four bulbs if refreshing both low and high beams.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Hood and Locate the Bulb Covers

  • Use the hood release inside your Tucson, then open the hood fully.
  • Use a flashlight to look behind each headlight housing.
  • The bulb access covers are on the rear of each headlight housing.
  • The outer bulb position is typically the low beam, and the inner bulb position is typically the high beam.
  • Work one side at a time.

Step 2: Create Working Room if Needed

  • On the passenger side, use your hands and a flashlight to check access behind the headlight.
  • If a plastic cover or intake duct blocks access, use a trim clip removal tool to lift any plastic push clips carefully.
  • If a 10mm fastener blocks a small cover, use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to remove it.
  • Set clips and fasteners aside in the order removed.

Step 3: Remove the Driver-Side Low Beam Bulb

  • Use your hand to rotate the rear low beam dust cover counterclockwise, if equipped, and remove it.
  • Use your fingers to press the connector release tab.
  • Pull the connector straight off the bulb.
  • Turn the old H11 low beam headlight bulb counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
  • Pull the bulb straight out of the housing.
  • Use a clean microfiber towel if you need to handle the old bulb glass.

Step 4: Install the Driver-Side Low Beam Bulb

  • Hold the new H11 low beam headlight bulb by the plastic base only.
  • Line up the bulb tabs with the slots in the housing.
  • Insert the bulb straight into the housing.
  • Turn the bulb clockwise until it locks firmly.
  • Push the connector onto the bulb until it clicks.
  • Reinstall the dust cover by hand and turn it clockwise until seated.
  • No torque spec applies because the bulb locks by hand.
  • Never force bulb tabs.

Step 5: Replace the Passenger-Side Low Beam Bulb

  • Move to the passenger-side headlight.
  • Use a flashlight to locate the matching low beam bulb position.
  • Remove the dust cover by hand, if equipped, by turning it counterclockwise.
  • Press the connector release tab by hand and pull the connector straight off.
  • Turn the old H11 low beam headlight bulb counterclockwise about a quarter turn and remove it.
  • Install the new H11 low beam headlight bulb by aligning the tabs, inserting it straight, and turning clockwise until locked.
  • Push the connector on until it clicks, then reinstall the dust cover by hand.
  • No torque spec applies because the bulb locks by hand.

Step 6: Replace the Driver-Side High Beam Bulb if Needed

  • Use a flashlight to locate the inner high beam bulb on the driver-side headlight housing.
  • Remove the rear cover by hand if equipped.
  • Press the connector release tab by hand and pull the connector straight off the bulb.
  • Turn the old 9005 high beam headlight bulb counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
  • Pull the bulb straight out.
  • Hold the new 9005 high beam headlight bulb by the plastic base only.
  • Insert it straight, align the tabs, and turn clockwise until it locks.
  • Push the connector on until it clicks.
  • No torque spec applies because the bulb locks by hand.

Step 7: Replace the Passenger-Side High Beam Bulb if Needed

  • Use a flashlight to locate the inner high beam bulb on the passenger-side headlight housing.
  • Remove the rear cover by hand if equipped.
  • Press the connector release tab by hand and pull the connector straight off.
  • Turn the old 9005 high beam headlight bulb counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
  • Pull the bulb straight out.
  • Install the new 9005 high beam headlight bulb by lining up the tabs and turning clockwise until locked.
  • Push the connector on until it clicks.
  • No torque spec applies because the bulb locks by hand.

Step 8: Reinstall Any Removed Covers or Clips

  • If you removed any plastic ducting or covers, place them back in their original position.
  • Use your fingers to press plastic clips back into place.
  • If any 10mm bolts were removed, use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to reinstall them snugly.
  • Torque to 7-10 Nm (62-89 in-lbs)

Step 9: Test the Headlights

  • Turn the ignition to accessory mode or start your Tucson.
  • Turn on the low beams and verify both sides work.
  • Switch on the high beams and verify both sides work if replaced.
  • Use a flashlight to inspect behind the housings and confirm all covers are seated.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Park 25 feet from a wall on level ground and check that both headlight beams look even.
  • ✅ If one beam looks much higher or lower, the bulb may not be fully seated.
  • ✅ Recheck the bulb lock tabs before adjusting headlight aim.
  • ✅ Avoid touching the new bulb glass; if touched, wipe it gently with a clean microfiber towel.
  • ✅ Take a short nighttime test drive to confirm good visibility.
